Should I Take a Third Subject Test?

I plan on applying to MIT, which requires 2 subject tests (1 math and 1 science). I just got my results for Math 2 (800), so now I’m looking to take the Chemistry one in October (entering IB Chemistry III this year with 2 previous years of chemistry).

At the same time, however, I am concerned that my GPA/class rank is the one area of my college application that is not so good (everything else is fine). I am contemplating taking the U.S. History subject test because I’m in IB History of the Americas and I took AP U.S. History; that is to say, I have reason to believe a third subject test would help me.

Would it benefit me to take on a third subject test, or am I better off using my time doing something else?

If the college asks for 2, then the only benefit for taking 3 is that you can choose the best 2, which would not work for MIT when the 3rd is USH. Now if you plan to apply to a college that asks for a STEM and a humanities test, then yes, you should take a 3rd. Or if you are applying to Georgetown that asks for 3. Otherwise, use the time on other aspects of your application packet. More ≠ better.

I would not take the USH test became it wouldn’t benefit you in any way. It would be a better idea to take another Science and choose from the better of the two.

Agree, if a school asks for 2 SAT II that is what they want to see. The only advantage of taking a thrid is that you can generally decide which ones to send (only a few colleges require all testing be sent)

It is highly unlikely that you will get into MIT with a GPA in the 3.5 range. You keep grasping for things to make up for your GPA (ex. being adobe certified, taking extra subject tests, AP scores, explaining special circumstances etc.) but you need to understand that with an acceptance rate well under 10% MIT routinely has to turn down students with perfect GPAs, standardized test scores etc.

It is fine to apply to a couple of reach schools but please focus time and attention on seeking out schools that match your academic stats and that appear affordable. You should qualify for many fine schools where you can have a great 4 year expereince and get where you want to go in life.
