I'm going to try and keep this simple.
I'm in community college and will transfer to a UC in the future as a biology or biochem major. I've recently learned my chemistry is strong but I'm weak in areas that require pure memorization such as biology.

So i am currently taking zoology and I am not doing as well as I had hoped. I did not expect the teacher to be as difficult as she is. Even the smartest students are struggling in this class. I currently have a C and I am SHOCKED that this could even happen.

My transcript: approx GPA is 3.9+
I have 1 B on my transcript as of now (from biology) but all my other classes are A's (gen chem, all my calculus,GE's etc) my chem is strong, so I'm sure i'll be fine in O chem once I start.

I don't think my chances of getting in to UC davis will be affected too much from 1 C, but I am worried about medical school.

Is it better for me to take the C and finish the class? Or take a W and retake it in the future (I am positive I will get an A next time).

When I was younger I found out too late how devastating a C was. It wrecked my GPA and I couldn’t retake the course. So now I have to live with Cs on my transcript.

You’re worried about med-school? You realize that 1 C will only marginally affect your overall GPA right (assuming you maintain your current grades though out college)? Med-schools will look at your overall GPA, but the emphasis is and has always been on your MCATs, ECs, and GPA from requisite med-school courses.

If you take the W, are you going to repeat the course? “Zoology” is not a med-school prerequisite. One W is not going to derail your med-school aspirations.

One W is hardly worth making a fuss over and will be overlooked by grad school adcoms. On the other hand, a “C”, even if it is only one, can raise some red flags and will hurt your GPA. Take the W. Especially since your GPA won’t be affected if you do opt for a W and it won’t have any impact on your expected transfer date.

Medical schools look at every grade and make the logical deduction that no student withdraws from a class they are doing well in. More than likely they will assume a W was taken to avoid a D or F.
