Should i take Algebra 1 over the summer?

Currently, I am taking Pre-Algebra in 8th grade. I took the placement test for Accelerated Geometry and passed very easily. I studied for about 2 months for it. Now I’m debating whether I should self study Algebra 1 over the summer to go to a soccer camp or just take the Algebra 1 class over the summer( it coincides). How important is Algebra 1 for Geometry and up? What are main parts to learn (I’ll find the details myself). Thank you!

Wrong thread. It would be doable, but I wouldn’t skimp on any topics. You will be using Algebra 1 for all of your future math/science courses and even Economics. Geometry is one thing, but Algebra 1 could decide how successful you’ll be in academics for the rest of your high school career and beyond. I took the class in 8th grade and the best thing that helped me was using an online program called Thinkwell. Super informative! I also think it’s reasonably priced for all of the information, quizzes, and tests they include. If you did Duke TIP in 7th grade, there is a nice discount through the program. Is the placement test placing you into or out of Geometry? What is the typical sequence at your school?

Thank you for answering my question!
To answer your questions, the placement test placed me into Geometry, which I might take in 9th grade (HS). In middle school there was an accelerated math class you could’ve taken(I didn’t), and you could’ve taken Algebra 1 in 8th grade. In 9th grade, there is an Algebra 1 class to take.

Would you suggest taking Geometry over the summer instead?(I know I’m changing the question lol).
Once again, thank you.

Hi, I’m an eighth grader (entering 9th grade last year) who took Algebra I last year and just finished with Geometry. A strong background in Algebra I is very important for a success in Geometry. Actually, Algebra I is necessary for success in ALL future math courses.

While Algebra I is quite easy, it may be difficult to cover all of the topics over the summer and be sufficient in it. I wouldn’t do Geometry over the summer either, as you definitely want to take the honors (and less condensed) version to do well on the SAT. Algebra I is on the SAT a lot too. If you do need to accelerate in math, I would recommend taking Algebra II and Geometry concurrently sophomore year (as you do not need one to know the other). You may also have difficulty in Algebra II by learning Algebra I over the summer since Algebra II builds off of Algebra I.

If you really need math class over the summer, do Algebra I (though I don’t advise it). I would purchase a book and self-study it, and maybe attend a supplementary summer school class. Make sure you are proficient in the topic before advancing to geometry. In Algebra I Honors, I learned:
*Parabolas (vertex, axis of symmetry, plotting, etc.)
*Simplest Radical Form
*Minimum, Maximum, Domain, Range of a Graph
*Simplifying Exponents
*Polynomials (Factoring trinomials, FOILing binomials, adding/subtracting)
*Systems of Linear Equations and Inequalities
*Y-Intercept Form, Point Slope Form, Vertex Form
*Completing the Square
*Graphing
*Statistics

  • Some other things I cannot remember!

Like I said, I recommend just sticking with Algebra I next year and possibly doubling up on Algebra II and Geometry sophomore year. Though, if you do try to skip ahead, make sure you have a solid foundation and understanding in that class. I hope this helped, and feel free to ask me any questions!

My daughter took geometry over the summer. Geometry is the only math class allowed over the summer at her school. Algebra is too vital to be rushed through. If you want to move ahead in math, do it with geometry.
