Should I take another foreign language instead of an AP?

Next year I will be a junior. This summer I am taking Spanish 1 online. Here is my schedule (as of right now).

APUSH
AP Psychology
AP Lang
AP Chem
Pre-calc honors
French 3 honors
Personal financial planning

I am deciding if I want to take Spanish 2 instead of AP Psych. I am very passionate about languages, but I also love psychology. I can’t decide what to do. Psych would look better because it’s AP, but I could always just take Psych in college to learn more about the brain. But the faster I acquire the Spanish language the better. Please help!!

If you take Spanish 2, then you can get to Spanish 3 (and French 4) in your senior year. If you are passionate about languages and want to continue Spanish and French in college, this is the more useful choice. Even if you want to major in psychology, the intro course is a one semester course in college; then you can take the more advanced courses. In contrast, gaining proficiency in foreign languages typically takes a longer sequence of courses. Having a higher level in high school can allow you to start at a higher level in college.

^I agree. Spanish 2+ French 4 would be better if you’re passionate about languages, and since it’s unusual it’s something you could talk about in your application and/or in interviews.

First make sure you get to level 4 of some language at some point. That is a requirement/strong reccomendation that some colleges have.

After that, if you are into languages and want to maybe major in that area, take spanish if you want.
If you don’t think you will major in something where multiple languages is useful, take AP Psych.
