should i take another SAT?

hi, so on my first sitting i got 2110 (CR: 680, W: 690, M: 740) but i also got 800 on math level II. my friend told me that carnegie mellon replaces your math sat score with your math lvl II score if it's higher, so is it worth taking another SAT? (cmu is my highest reach btw)

2110 is already good…

While 2110 is a good score, if you think you can improve your score substantially, you should absolutely try again. My first score was very good, but I knew I could do better, so I retook the test and improved by 150 points. It’s always worth trying.

Worth taking again. Study up. You are now practiced at it. Try to break the psychological 700 barrier on CR and W.

Only you know whether you have upwards potential based on how you were doing on the practice tests. If you practiced all summer, were typically scoring around 1900 by the end of your practices sessions and then got 2110 (a good test day), then taking the test again makes no sense. If on the other hand, you didn’t study, or were consistently cracking 2200 on the practice tests, then yes, you might want to try again. (You can also apply this logic to the sections). Again, only you know if you’ve pretty much maxed out yet.

I don’t think it’s a valuable use of your time. With a 2110 and 800 Math 2 it won’t be a huge challenge to get into CMU. I think your time is better spent working on your app, fine tuning your essays and making sure all the administrative tasks associated with the process are done and done well. Personally, I don’t understand the compulsion on this board to constantly take and re-take tests when your performance is already very good. I understand the desire to do your best but here it reaches a bizarre level.

I guess I have a different view than the other posters, namely it’s impossible to answer your question without understanding the rest of your stats. your current sats are probably around middle of the pack for cmu, if your gpa is low, you may want to take them again. I’ve heard it said that cmu weights more heavily towards standardized test scores.

also, rather than rely on your friend’s advice, you might want to send an email to admissions to ensure they do replace your math score with sat II.

luck!

“Personally, I don’t understand the compulsion on this board to constantly take and re-take tests.”

I do. We were told at S’s ED school that he needed a particular minimum SAT scores to qualify for merit aid. He retook it, got his score up, and it saved us a bundle.

If we thought he’d maxed out on his potential already, we wouldn’t have encouraged him to do it. As is, those extra hours practicing made a big difference to our bank account.

680 CR is not that competitive for Carnegie Mellon and CMU has pretty high averages for CR and W (although it’s not a deal breaker). Definitely worth a retake.
