Should I take AP Calculus AB even though I never took pre-calc?

My new HS, after Math B, gives students the option to take AP Calculus... should I take it without any prior knowledge of it, or will I BOMB?

i'd say dont take it but i suck at math.

I was told that having AP Calc BC on a resume looks good, and the only way I can get it is if I take AB during junior year.

Talking to my guidance counselor, my schedule for next year will be:

AP Goverment
AP Macroeconomics
AP US History
AP Physics
AP English
AP Calculus AB... (potentially, as this thread shows)

At most schools, Calc AB isn't a prereq for BC, and it is definitely possible to succeed in BC without prior calculus. The BC test covers everything in AB and a few additional topics after that. At my school, people go from precalc to either AB or BC Calc, and no one takes both.

The only way skipping AB calc could pose a problem for you is if everyone at your new school takes AB first. In that case, the teacher may assume that the students already know half the material and dive into the more advanced concepts right away. Find out from your guidance counselor if this is the case.

With that being said, unless you are applying for a competitive engineering program, adcoms won't look down on Calc AB your senior year.

Can I still take AP Physics with pre-calc, though?

I don't know about Physics, but regarding you doing well in Calc, I should think that you'd do fine as long as Math B had trig stuff in it.

There are two AP Physics exams: level B and level C.

Level B does not require calculus. Level C does.
