Hello, I am a junior right now and we are selecting our courses for next year this week. My question is, would it be worthwhile to take AP Calculus? I am currently in AP Statistics, which is technically my fourth math credit (the last one I need to graduate). At my school, half of the school year is Honors Calculus, then the other half is AP Calculus. I was wondering if it would be a good decision to take these two classes. I come from an alright math background (91 in Honors Geometry, 95 in Honors Alg 2, 90 in Honors Precalculus), but am not sure if the rigor of Calculus will be too overwhelming for me. In addition to those classes I would be in AP English Lit, Dual Enrollment Psychology and Physics, Honors German IV, Internship, and Advanced Drawing & Painting. The Precalculus class at my school is known to be pretty rigorous (also, the teacher doesn't teach very well and doesn't help struggling students) but I've heard from others that they love the Calculus teacher, even though the content is harder. Would it be better to take AP Government and an easy elective than Calc? Hope to hear back soon! Thanks!

Your description of Calc and PreCalc is virtually identical to how it is at my school. Take it. Calc is easier than precalc

Is it AB or BC? BC covers material at college pace, while AB covers a portion of it at a slower pace.

What majors are you considering for college? If they are those which require calculus (i.e. all science and engineering, economics, and business), then you will have to take it anyway at some point in time.

AP Calc is the best AP math test:)

I’m not currently taking PreCalc Honors, I’m taking advanced topics which is precalc non-honors. Would it be crazy to jump straight into AP Calc or would I be better off taking Calc Honors??
Any advice is appreciated!

Mikerow, welcome to College Confidential.

What you’ve just done here is called hijacking a thread. You’ve jumped into a discussion of somebody else’s issue and made it about your own predicament. It’s generally not well received. If you need to ask a question of your own that doesn’t really affect the original poster, people will appreciate it if you start your own thread.

Also, you’ve really asked a question that nobody outside your school can answer knowledgeably. We’re not familiar with the non-honors class you’ve been taking or with the teachers of the various classes. That doesn’t mean people won’t give you answers, but you’re going to get much more informed advice by asking teachers you trust at your school than by asking strangers on the internet.

As long as you can handle it, its better to take harder class in high school than not. You would be much more prepared for calc i or calc ii in college if you’ve learned it in high school, where you have a lot more support and help. However, Calc is definitely not easy enough to be an elective.
