Hi Y'all
If I can manage to self-study the AP that I'm really interested in, should I take the AP class or just self-study it?

Say, assuming I love environmental science, and I intend to major in it in the college. While some people say the AP ES is so easy that it's not worthy to take the class. But maybe I can learn more and something beyond the knowledge if I take the class. What should I do?

If the subject was something that I truly loved and enjoyed, I personally would take the class. Your teacher can perhaps offer insight to things outside the scope of the AP curriculum, and you’ll probably retain the information better. For example, I am highly interested in biology and psychology, and both are relatively simple to self-study (pure memorization). However, I decided to take both AP classes in school, because I’d like to reinforce my studying/learning with actual class discussions and assignments.

Plus, it’s easy to get behind when self-studying and put it off until April/May. If you take the course, you’ll be pacing yourself and may be better-prepared for the exam.

In essence: If you like the subject, take the class. :)

If the teacher is good, take the class. If the teacher is bad and gives a lot of busy work, self study.

Hi~SeekingUni, I love bio and psycho too…I plan to take AP bio next year but I wonder if my school will allow a new sophomore student to do that… I’m pre-studying the AP bio now (reading the textbook, learning bio words and doing some multiple-choices questions…) and I found that AP Bio is not that “hard” ,although I admit that it takes a lot of time to do well…)
