Should I take AP Computer Science when I'm in my school's Robotics Team?

I’m interested in a lot of subjects and AP classes at school, and one I’m considering is AP CS. Would it be worth it to take it if I’m already learning programming in my high school FTC Robotics Team?

Probably not… but… If you want to major in CS, taking CSP and CSA and doing well in the exams could get you out of the introductory class in college. CSP teaches block programming and CSA focuses on java, either of those may be different than what you are doing in the club.

DD is thoroughly enjoying her CSP class. She has prior programming experience, and is finding it easy for the most part, although she has had some fun challenges here and there.

I would take it…

  1. It may be a more structured way of learning programming
  2. It might make more sense if you take it after you have had some background
  3. If you are going to major in CS, a college might wonder why you didn’t take the class
  4. It might be easy for you
  5. You might get AP credit
