I am unsure of whether or not I want to take AP Lang for my junior year. I am not very good at writing but I want to take this class to improve my skills before college. Next year I am taking APUSH, which is considered the hardest AP class in my school, along with other honor classes (only a few students have actually gotten an A in APUSH) I want to take both APs but I don't know if I will be able to handle them with my other classes, sports, and ASB. I have asked several people who have taken both courses and they all say its doable and have gotten Bs in both but they do not do any sports. I don't want to take AP Lang if it will end up hurting my GPA. Even though I am not a strong writer will I still be able to do fairly well if I take AP Lang?

This question is really unanswerable because even the rigor of AP classes varies by school. For example, APUSH is a really easy class at my school, while AP Language is incredibly difficult.

I was in the same position as you. I took AP Language and APUSH this year as a junior, but I did a sport and many other EC’s. APUSH takes up more time than Lang because AP Lang is more of just reading and writing essays. Like you, I am not a strong writer whatsoever. English is actually one of the hardest subjects in school (I am more of math/science person). I think you should take it because in the end it really does help and colleges look at the challenge you took of taking two AP’s. I didn’t get A’s either, B’s in both, but I managed my time well and still had time for fun. Don’t stress and you will do fine. Also, APUSH and AP Lang exams in May are not hard at all, just study well. Good luck! :)

You really need to talk to people you know that have taken it. At my school both classes are VERY time consuming. AP Comp is also compacted into half a year. So it’s like doing 2 classes in one every day. If your school is like mine those 2 classes alone will give you a good 5-6 hours of solid homework a night.

If you’re naturally good at English, AP English shouldn’t be that hard. I took both those APs this year at my school and both are very difficult at my school, as well.

I’ve got to agree with everybody around here- it all depends.

However, from my perspective I think you should take the class. I don’t suppose it will hurt. I just finshed the class last semester and I loved the class! My writing has definetly improved. I think if whoever teaches the class is lenient, but not worthless, then go for it but if you simply cannot deal with the teacher then the class would be much harder.

I see APLANG as a tool, if you take advantage of it, you’re bound to progress. If not, then don’t bother investing any time- you’d only risk your grades and waste a slot in your high school schedule.

@Tutu13 I didn’t have to study that much every night. My teacher gave us an old AP Essay every Friday and graded it on the weekend. All we had to was either rewrite the ones we could improve on on our own time or read out of a text book about how to write a good argument. So I barely had any homework at all (I am on a block schedule if that means anything).

If you want to take APUSH, then tale APLANG, it would only help! If you can handle the load, then by all means take the class!

If you have any questions please ask me as I finished the class with a 96 and a 4 (possibly a 5) on the AP Exam.
