Should I take AP Lit?

Hey, I’m a junior, and I’ve never taken any advanced English class; however, I have taken pretty much all other advanced classes and gotten straight A’s (almost). I’m planning on taking all APs senior year which I don’t think will be as hard as this year because the only science class left will be AP Physics 2… and I’m going to take AP environmental online (8th hour).

In my basic English classes I have been getting high A’s and my teacher said she would write a recommendation for me to get into AP Lit. What should I expect? I am not the best writer nor reader, nor speaker.

You may not be the best writer, reader, or speaker but it sounds as if you are a hard worker and a good student. If that is the case, and you can block off the needed time to complete the reading, then IMHO, you should take AP Lit. Especially if the teacher is good (all the advanced teachers at my son’s schools have been the best) then I recommend taking it. It could be a great way to improve your reading and writing and it’s always nice to have a few more college credits to add to you application and transcript.

Thanks for the advice! I guess it could be helpful in the future.

There is another benefit of a good AP English teacher. Some of them are willing to help with reviewing college application essays.

My son’s high school AP Literature teacher had the class write Common App and UC essays as graded assignments with comments/suggestions. And this was for a class of about 35 students. Most of the class ended up with acceptances to Top-25 schools.

I’d say go for it! As previous replies have noted, you seem to be a hard worker indeed. If anything, maybe take a few AP Lit exams on college board and see if it’s far too difficult in your opinion, or if you think your performance can be improved with a good teacher and some work.

I’m not sure if your school allows this, but if within 2 weeks you find yourself struggling or if you decide that an AP english class is not for you, try to drop the class before a bad grade goes on your record. Best of luck!
