Should I take AP literature or AP lang?

My school is doing senior schedules right now, and I’m deciding which classes to take. So far, I have AP gov’t and AP economics on my list. I’m interested in majoring in film/tv production in college, and I was wondering if AP lit would benefit me? I heard that students read and analyze plays, poetry and other works, which is something I enjoy. I didn’t take AP Lang this year and I’m not sure if that would affect me if I went straight to AP lit. My friend says AP lang is wayyy better and useful, but I’m not sure. I like to think I’m not that great of a writer, but I just take my time when I write. Should I take AP lang or AP lit? Please share any experiences and thoughts

Lang is usually considered more useful for the non-lit major, but in many ways the exams require the same skills. If anything, lang is broader, since it has synthesis and argument essays in addition to rhetorical analyisis.

(That said, I’m a poetry guy so I love the lit)

If there is one thing that AP Lang does, it teaches you to be a better writer. I would pick Lang over Lit.

I would definitely check your dream colleges for which English classes you’d take your freshman year. If I’d known that Duquesne doesn’t offer college credit for AP Lang, I may have not bothered taking it. Duquesne only accepts AP Lit for credit, so hopefully I did well on the exam.

Both classes were nice, but lit was way more fun, and we read much better works and had better discussions(maybe that’s more of a better teacher thing).

However, Lang definitely taught me a lot about college level writing. I like the Lang essays better.

So it really just depends on which one will benefit you the most I guess. If you really can’t figure it out after awhile, just go with Lang since it comes first in most schools.
