I'm currently a sophomore, and completed precalculus with an A- on my final. Should I take AP Physics B or AP Calculus AB? I do not want to take both because I want my focus to be mainly on the humanities, but still showing that i challenge myself in math.

Thanks

Well if you want to show that you can challenge yourself in math, then do AP Calculus AB. Physics B doesn’t actually have difficult math at all, it’s just applying that math that can be a pain.

Take AP Calc. You’ll need to take Calc in college unless you can get the credit for AP Calc AB and you won’t necessarily need to take Physics. Get the credit out of the way in high school so you can focus more on humanities in college.

Will AP Calc AB give me credit for math in college? I’ll be forced to take AP Calculus BC as a senior if I take AB as a junior

^It should give you credit, but if you want to be sure, google “-college you’re applying to- AP credits” and it should show you which classes AP Calc will get you out of and what score you need to get on the test to do so.

You should be taking a math class every year - and physics is usually considered to be a science class. So if you take AP Physics, you should be taking another math class, like statistics.

As for the credits, it depends on the school - some do, some don’t. At most schools, Calc AB is worth a Calculus I credit, while Calc BC is worth both a Calculus I and Calculus II credit.

I’m not sure how difficult Physics is, having never taken it, but if you got an A- in Pre-Calc, you’ll be more than fine in Calc. I actually found that Calc was easier than Pre-Calc.

Thank you everyone!! How about waiting until senior year to take AP calc AB?

Thank you. Why are so many people against AP Physics B?

Because you need calculus, no matter what. If you don’t take it in high school chances are you’ll have to take it in college. Also you got an A- in pre calc so you should be fine grade-wise in calc. Also from my experiences, I notice that the kids in my AP physics class who plan on studying humanities in college hate it and have been counting down the days until they can get out of there since first semester. It makes more sense for you to take calc.

If I take AP Calc AB junior year, should I still take AP Calculus BC senior year?
Or is AB enough to impress colleges?

Well, not taking a math senior year won’t look too good. With that said, you don’t have to take Calc BC, but you might want to just to get the credits out of the way for college. You may want to consider AP Stats. Look at the websites for the colleges you’re interested in and see if they give more credit for AP Stats or Calc BC, but you definitely want to take a math senior year.
