I’m thinking I want to go on as a chemistry major. I’m doubled up in science now (honors physics and AP Chemistry). My AP Chem teacher recommends I take AP Physics if I want to major in chem. My honors physics teacher has given me the okay / approval to do so, thinking I’ll perform well. But I really love science and want to double up on it again. Since I am doing Calculus AB rather than BC, and taking mechanics rather than mechanics and E&M, is it okay to take AP Bio or another science class with it? This is what I’m thinking for my senior year right now:
AP Calculus AB (the class is a joke compared to Honors Precalculus, so this will be easier).
AP Physics C: Mechanics
AP European History (took APUSH last year, got a 4 on exam and As both semesters and i’m in AP Gov now, so this should be a breeze)
AP Spanish Language
MAYBE a regular english elective rather than AP Lit
AP Bio???
I know what it takes to have a demanding schedule. I’m in 2 sciences now, and I overall have 3 APs and 3 Honors classes. Would you recommend taking physics mechanics with ap bio? Thanks!
What you have is a rigorous schedule with out AP Bio.
Also right now you are doubling up…but it is only October. You don’t know what your grades will be. You don’t know how you did on the AP Chem exam.
For Chemistry, I would look on some potential colleges and see if you need to take Bio as a Chem major. I would suspect not. if not, i would not add another AP science.
Take this into account when thinking about this:
In the fall, you are in college application season. You may be taking the SAT again. You may want to visit some more colleges. You have to write college- specific essays (hopefully you already wrote your common app essay over the summer.). You have to fill out your Common App and get recommendations. You have to choose which colleges to apply to.
Also you may be in marching band or Sports or be a leader of a club. College Apps is like another time-sucking EC on top of that.
Then in the spring, you may have senioritis. You are been accepted to college and are looking toward the finish line. You have to study for the AP tests…it will be difficult to study for too many at once. You also have to keep your grades up.
Have you had any bio yet? Most stem majors want to see bio, chem, and physics. If you’ve already taken bio, I would say take AP physics and not try to double up since your proposed schedule is already very AP heavy (euro tends to be a lot of work).
DS20 took AP Bio, Hon Chem and AP Physics I in 9th grade and did ok(A-, A-, B+; 3&4 scores, 720 SAT Bio). If you’re STEM, AP Bio is more relevant for major than AP World History. Why not drop SS class and take AP Bio and AP Phys C? It is doable, especially if you had a previous Bio and/ or Phys class.
