Hello I am thinking about majoring in computer science in college. I am going to be a senior in highschool and i have no knowledge of comp sci but the comp sci teacher is letting my skip to AP Comp Sci to catch up. I am taking PreAP Precalulus AP BIO AP ECO AP GOV AP ENGLISH and im wondering if i should add AP STAT or is that too much on my schedule. Im taking alot of math related classes to give me a strong backround to computer science.
Is there a way you can take a Calculus class at a CC instead of Stats at your HS? You’d have to take a placement test. Even if it’s for one semester. Not having Calculus can be a deal breaker at some schools and in most other cases will make you less attractive when it comes to college applications for CS.
Have you taken physics and chem? I’m also concerned about no calc.
Most colleges do not require entering CS majors to have had calculus in high school, and it may not be all that doable if you will be in precalculus in 12th grade (taking calculus without solid precalculus knowledge is not a good idea).
AP statistics is less likely to be credited against a requirement for the CS major, since statistics that a CS major requires may be calculus-based statistics.
Yes, if you apply to engineering-based CS majors, having some kind of physics and chemistry in high school is desirable.
I hear Calculus is valued far higher than Stats. I would suggest you talk to your guidance counselors about what you should do, because I’m sure they’d have a far better knowledge of the issue.
