Hi guys! I am trying to figure out if I should take AP Statistics or not. Can you tell me what it's like? I'm not the strongest math student, but I really enjoy English, and I feel like that will help me. Can you tell me what the work load is like both in school and out of school? I am currently taking Trigonometry, and I have taken Geometry and Algebra I and II, do you think any of these courses have helped me prepare for this class? I am also in AP English Language and Composition, so that might help. Thanks so much for your help :)

Your previous math classes would help more with Pre-Calc or AP Calc.

Stats is pretty easy, although it’s not a “blow off” class like some yahoos on here say it is. It’s an AP class. With that said, I have very little to no homework everyday in it. If you can understand it, it is really easy but I know a lot of ‘smart’ kids who just can’t comprehend some of the stuff and really struggle.

Do you have a good teacher in that class?

I think he’s good, however this is only his second year teaching it.

Oh, ok. I have two AP Stat teachers in my school- one is amazing and one is awful. Hope I get lucky!

Also, do you consider yourself a strong math student, or a strong english student?

Well in my AP Stats class, we only have 3-5 problems a night, so the homework is pretty low. I’m really good in English and pretty average at math, and so far, I’ve done really well in AP Stats. It was definitely the right decision for me to take it.

If you’re a stronger English student, I would recommend Stats, because it’s a lot of knowing how to use a calculator and reading the language and interpreting it. If you can read and pick out the information you need (a strong English person would do this), then it’s a really easy class, because you just plug it into the calculator. Anytime we’ve had serious math this year, I’ve been heavily confused, but that’s been hardly any of the time, and I’ve ranged from an A- to an A+ in the class… and I’ve never had higher than a B in math before.

I don’t think that previous math classes are very helpful at all for Stats, though.

That’s actually my case. My teacher is only teaching for his second year, and I feel like I’m doing really well.

I’d say go for it.

I’d do it. I’m a very mathy guy and doubled up with Stats and the notorious precalc course at my school (as a junior) and have very little trouble with stats. The material is a breeze and the tests are all very easy.

On the other hand, some very bright kids aren’t doing well in the course. I’m the only junior in there so it’s possible some seniors on the good end of an early decision result are just slacking off, but who knows.

I’d go for it
