Im currently enrolled in chem 207, though I already have a 5 on the AP to skip out of the class. My student advisor thinks taking chem 207 when I have an AP 5 is a terrible idea, especially when I am in 2 other math/science classes.

I think he thinks that by taking chem 207, I'm not "gaining" anything on my academic credits even though I still have to put work into it. He suggests dropping chem all together this semester and just take 208. Or, take 215 if I really want to. The only thing about 208 or 215 is that I took chem back in junior year and don't think I remember that much stuff.

What should I do?? Should I just stay with 207?? I plan to go into engineering/pre-med, but am open to other majors...

I took Chem 215, Bio 101, Bio 102, and Math 213 my first semester. In fact, I took b/w 2-4 science courses each semester at Cornell. If you're going to be premed and/or engineering, you're going to have to learn to handle a tough courseload.

oops, I meant 209. yeah, I can skip out of the engineering chem class with my AP credits. But I was worried if I'd catch up if I went straight to chem 208 or 215...

right norcalguy, 123orange you may want to do Chem 209 if you want to transfer to CoE. Chem 209 is identical to Chem 207 except the course is full of engineers and it is an engineering requirement.

I cant take 209 unless I were in CoE. Also, I think for engineers, they can skip out of 209 with AP credits also. So basically the only reasons for me to take 207 would be either for med school or for reviewing chem for 208... I don't know if it's worth it right now.

I agree with your advisor. You are paying about $4,000 to not learn anything? And then maybe, as the ultimate insult, not get the grade you expect to boot?

Be a man (or woman). Take 215. Justify their admissions decision. Learn something. Prove you deserve your spot at Cornell.

OR skip out and take something else of value, that you don't already know.

Expand your mind. Increase your capabilities.

umm its kind of not like that lol
I think I have legitimate worries about not taking 215... along with math 192 and engri. It's because I am in cornell that I am worried about the rigor of the course, since EVERYONE in chem 215 would have had a 5/4 on the AP... and I don't know if it's a good thing to take on that course when I also have other math/science classes that require time...

Seriously, one of the worst things you can do here is skip out on a course because it intimidates you.
And you do know what add/drop is, right? You can add a course like 215 and drop if it's way too hard/you don't like it and you want to either switch down to 207/209 or take a different class entirely. Starting out with 207/209 is a total waste of your money. Taking 207/209 in the long run is fine if you try out 215, find it to be too hard/time-consuming/whatever but still want to take chem, and drop down. But at least start out with 215. At least give it a try.

The problem with that advice, lianri, is that Chem 215 is pretty easy. It's essentially Chem 207-208 material condensed into one semester. Chem 216 is evil. Unfortunately, by then, it's too late to drop down to 208. It specifically says not to take 208 after taking 215 in the course guide in order to prevent the mass exodus of people from Chem 216.
