I’m a sophomore in high school currently, and I’m going to explore AP. I’m allowed to do AP Biology next year, but I also want to do AP Chemistry, but I have to take Chemistry II first. The Chemistry II teacher is also the AP Chemistry teacher. Ive heard he is challenging but a good teacher, and since I only have room for 7 classes (52 minutes each) I won’t be able to have a study hall. Here is what my schedule would look like.
- AP Biology
- Chemistry II
- Spanish III
- AP Computer Science Principles
- Pre-Calculus + Trigonometry
- Advanced Composition Honors / American Literature Honors (1 semester each)
- US History
Senior Year I would have AP Chemistry. I just need some help figuring out if 2 science classes, 1 being AP, would be too much if I do not have a study hall. Thanks!
That depends on who you are as a person. I think that it is perfectly reasonable but I come from a school where ppl take 4-5 APs in junior year. Are you going to take physics senior year then? Most colleges like to see bio chem and physics.
Honestly, your schedule looks like a great blend of classes, in that there’s a good balance between memory-heavy classes(USH, AP Biology) and more logic-based conceptual classes (Math, Comp Sci). I agree with @XtremeBlaze777 in that if you’re planning on applying as a STEM major to college, you should probably have taken Biology, Chemistry, and Physics (unless, of course, your school doesn’t offer it).
In any case, that schedule depends on your work ethic and time management but basically it looks VERY doable. I would suggest you go through with that Chemistry teacher, you’d be surprised on how much fun you’d have with teachers like that!
It depends what else you do in your life. You didn’t mention what you do outside of studying. Do you play a sport? Have a job? Participate in activities? How much time do you have for school work outside of the school day? Do you like to do other things beside HW and study? Will this schedule burn you out or do you love to consume yourself with academics?
In college students are not required to be in class all day so their time management is a bit different than high school. High school sucks up the entire day with study halls, lunch, gym class, and even homeroom. Many find this the biggest difference in time available between high school and college.
Good luck with your decision.
I agree that it depends on the other commitments you have, how capable you believe you are in all of these subjects, and what your goals are. I’d also add that it depends on your school. The AP curriculum was designed to be a standardized class but variation among teachers could mean that AP Bio at your school could mean something very different than it does at another school.
For example, AP Bio is considered so challenging at my school that only seniors really ever take it. Meanwhile, a good chunk of juniors are taking classes like AP Chem and even Physics. I’d talk to some other students about their experience. But if I was going to guess, your schedule isn’t impossible if you can handle it.
