I am an incoming freshman majoring in computer engineering and I am stuck choosing between these two classes. CSE 91 is two units and required for my major, but seems easy enough to place in other quarters, while ENG 1 (engineering 1) is a one unit optional class which seems to be rather interesting.

However, I cannot sign up for both as I will exceed the maximum number of units for incoming freshman (19.5). If I choose ENG 1, it will give me a more convenient schedule (I will be commuting). I would appreciate info from people who have taken or know a lot about ENG 1 to know whether it's worth it to drop CSE 91 and replace it with ENG 1 :)

I too was stuck in a similar dilemma, but it was deciding between a music seminar that seemed really interesting to me, and this ENG 1 that otherwise seemed really useful to my major (CS). ENG1 appears to be only offered in the fall, whereas you can take CSE 91 later in the winter.

ENG 1/2/3 seems like really useful courses, and probably no real workload. Perhaps you can get permission to add it even beyond the unit limit? On the other hand, that means that you would have 19 units of other courses, which is usually considered an above-normal workload (especially if the courses involve labs, term projects, or computer programming). If you do take that many other courses, be prepared to drop one before the drop deadline if the workload is too high.

If CSE 91 is at the head of an important prerequisite sequence for your major, you may want to keep it and drop one of your other courses if the total units or workload is too high.
