I'm currently in the 8th grade and I'm taking Pre-ap (the equivalent of Honors) Spanish III. During my freshman year, I will take AP Spanish Language to complete the Spanish foreign language course sequence in my school district. This will leave me with one other elective slot to fill in. I am looking to get into highly competitive schools and most of these schools recommend three consecutive years or more of a foreign language during high school. The thing is, my school district only offers Spanish and French and since I will exhaust the Spanish courses available to me by the end of freshman year, the only other language I may take is French. I'm not really interested in French but I don't hate the idea of taking French. I'm just wondering how hard it will be to pick up a new language. I'm extremely fluent in English and Spanish if that helps at all.

Take it. What other choice do you have?

It won’t be hard to pick up another language. It is another language after all.

Spanish and French are quite similar so it should be pretty easy for you. At my school, if you have a Spanish background, you can skip French 1 and go to French 2.

Could you continue your Spanish at a local college?

ArtsyGirl13: I’m not sure. I’m currently a guinea pig in this new program where I can take Spanish high school courses in middle school. I would have to see if they added a whole new level of Spanish at our high school just for us.

whoa… your in 8th grade and already taking Spanish III? In my school district you have to take Spanish V Honors before AP Spanish and they only offer Spanish I in middle school so nobody actually takes AP! While you could mention to them that you took it in middle school, they only really care about your high school grades. That’s why I don’t trust those high school courses in middle school program- should’ve started Spanish in high school. But if your going to switch to French you don’t really need the Spanish AP because colleges look for a few years in hs of the same language.
