As someone who has only been briefly acquainted with the ways of Chemistry, is it advised that I take the first segment of college chemistry without any type of remedial instruction? The only prerequisite for the class is that you must have taken at least Pre-Calculus but, to me, that doesn't seem like enough. I would think that you need to be rather erudite in a topic before attempting its study through college-level coursework.

You are not expected nor required to know enough chemistry to get through something like General Chemistry I. That is why you will be taking General Chemistry I. You are not restricted in course selection to areas in which you are already proficient.

Beginning survey courses in college teach you everything you need to know, starting from the beginning. They assume you don’t know anything about the subject, that’s why you take it.

General Chemistry 1 isn’t the beginning survey course, though. At my school that’s called Chemistry for Today and it’s recommended that you take that before General Chemistry 1 if you never had chemistry in high school. But that may be different at your school.

I agree gen chem 1 has a pre req which is pre chem or something along those lines

In most schools, Gen Chem I has a high school chemistry pre-req.

Yes chemistry is a subject that’s not to be screwed around with. So they usually have a pre req to weed out the weak ones

If it’s at all relevant to you major, take it. If you need an investigative lab for gen eds, take it. I re-learned almost all the material over last year after taking 2 years of physics between my high school chem and Gen Chem in college.

It all depends on you. I was in gen chem 1 my first semester of college. Although I could have done better if I actually tried I kind of wish I had taken the pre-req class. If you are a science major it is better that you take it to get it out the way early. Otherwise you might want to take college chem or whatever comes before gen chem in your school.

At my school, you only needed high school chemistry for general chem. I passed it with a C while not really learning anything, and I didn’t remember anything from high school chem.
