Should i take Honors English or AP English Junior year?

They're both weighted and the rest of my schedule is
AP Computer science
AP U.S
AP Chemistry
AP Spanish 4
AP Statistic (Taking Calc BC this year)

I'm taking honors english right now as a sophomore but i get Cs on my essays and was close to a C+ in the class most of the semester (82%) and ended up with an 84%. I want to take AP English because i heard he teaches valuable skills that i can't learn in honors like rhetorics and stuff but i'm probably going to get a C in that class since there are two essays and they're worth 70% of my grade. Will a C in my AP English class Junior year look bad to colleges? Or is it better to just take honors English and get an A or B?

If you think you will get a C in AP English, take Honors English.

Do NOT take AP English unless you are very good at English
Take the honors class. You’ll kill yourself taking AP English

If you’re getting C’s now, then putting yourself in AP English is putting yourself to failure cause those grades will drop dramatically in that class.

I was always told that if one were only allowed to take a single AP course in their entire high school career, then it should be English. However, if English isn’t your forte, then perhaps this isn’t as sound as one might think…

I’ll put things in perspective - prior to me taking AP English my Junior Year, I was a fantastic English student. In Honors English 9 and 10, I always received 97’s or higher every quarter, so I thought naturally, AP English would work out quite well in my favor. I wasn’t completely right in thinking so… AP English is a challenge, it forces you to look at pieces of nonfiction critically and read between the lines, and then further analyze said pieces in the form of well composed and thoughtfully organized essays.

On any given essay in Honors English, I’d receive between a 95-100, in AP English, however, I receive anywhere between maybe an 80 to a 95 on essays. For the quarter, I get barely an A- (Quarter 1: 92, Quarter 2: 90)…

… but all of this is only relevant if you care to look at classes only as a means of how they’ll effect your grades numerically… there is a lot more to AP English than just a GPA detriment/boost.

I LOVE AP English, and it’s an incredibly helpful course. Despite the challenging nature of the class and the slightly lower grades, I’m still very confident in my decision in taking it over Honors. But then again, I love English in general - and I think for one to reap similar benefits in the course, you have to feel the same way. I doubt a science-minded individual will see the underlying benefits that AP English has to offer, but I guess in the end, it all depends on the person.

How bad will a C in AP actually look compared to a B in honors?

A B in honors would be better. Try to avoid Cs whenever possible.

Why are you insisting that you’ll get a C in AP, though? You could take the course and excel in it - all it takes is a little diligence and a bit of self confidence.

^
says the person who says they did incredibly well in previous English classes until they took the AP class

If you got 95+s on previous English classes and barely got an A-, think about what someone would get if they got Bs or Cs in previous English classes

Don’t colleges like seeing that you took the hardest courses that the school offers though? So even that won’t offset anything?

“Don’t colleges like seeing that you took the hardest courses that the school offers though?”

Not if you’re getting Cs in them.

Yes, the like to see rigor, but colleges generally hate Cs. It is not worth ruining your transcript for one AP class. AP English is hard, I am like preamble and always had very high As on essays in English honors. Now I average a high B on the essays, the only reason I still maintain a high A in English is because our book related tests and projects are weighted heavily. Most people experience a grade drop of about one letter grade on their essays (in comparison to the grade they had on essays in honors English).

take honors. you have too many other ap classes. I know someone who was in ap english and he said it was ridiculous.
