Im a rising senior and debating whether I should register for the SAT in October. Ive taken it one time before, last March, and got a 2240, 800 R, 750 W, 690 M. Im pretty happy with that score, but I was wondering if having below a 700 in math (along with a composite score under 1500) would be a problem for competitive colleges. I plan on majoring in history or some other humanity, but I want to make a point that Im a well rounded student... however I only took subject tests in Lit, World and US history (and got two 800s in the two histories so dont feel the need to go back a take more). However I have taken AP Calc BC and got a 5 on the exam, but Im not sure if colleges would think that this is an acceptable substitute for a good SAT math score.
So yeah, would it be worth taking the SAT over again to improve my math score, or is it insignificant at that point?

The scores are strong, but seem lopsided. If it were me that had the same scores throughout the sections, I would determine whether I could raise the math score by 60-70 points while keeping the reading & writing scores constant. If I could do so, I would retake the test. The then obtained score of 2300 would be more secure than a strong, though somewhat unbalanced, score of ~2250.

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking. Also I’ve never taken the ACT, so do you think maybe i should give that a shot?

The only way to find out to take the ACT is to take a couple practice tests & study a few hours, but not too many, to see how fast it is that you are able to adapt to the format of the test & score well on it. If after a few practice tests & a few practice hours you are able to score as well on the ACT test as the SAT, choose which one you are more comfortable with. Keep in mind that you have a 2240 SAT score, so you do not have much to fret about regarding the testing part of your college application. Even without a retake, you will still be thoroughly considered for admission to any school, including those part of the Ivy League.

Im thinking I probably could raise my math score… I suppose a retake is worth a shot. Thanks!
