Should I take PHY 7A or BIS 2A first quarter? (BioSci major)

I’m an incoming freshman in the College of BioSci, but I can’t take MAT my first quarter, so the Dean recommended I take CHE 2A with PHY 7A (if I can get in 2nd pass). That is 7.5 hours of lab for my first quarter, whereas BIS 2A does not have a lab. Why is it recommended that I take Physics 7A, when that is normally started sophomore year, instead of BIS 2A, which is normally started winter quarter of freshman year?

Were you at the orientation from the 1st to today? I was there!

I don’t really have an answer, but just be happy you were at least able to get Chem. I’m Biochem and I didn’t get into MAT OR CHE. I’m kind of bummed about that.

Haha no I went to the one before!

Oh my goodness I’m sorry, hopefully you will get them during Pass 2 ): What classes are you signed up for at the moment?

Ah ok. Sometime during the first week we need to have a Davis CC meeting lol. Well I have RST 1D, CRD 02, NAS 01, and GEL 17. Basically all of them are random classes that were last on my list. Sorry for kind of stealing your thread, Ill restate your OP again!

PS: Anyone else reading, see Maylix’s post about why they should take PHY 7A as a freshman, which is normally soph, instead of BIS 2A which is usually winter Q freshman yr.

A small part of BIS 2A deals with CHE concepts/material, which is why they recommend taking CHE before BIS.

That’s odd that he’d recommend PHY 7A though. The course catalog says you must be taking/have taken MAT 16/17/21B in order to take PHY 7A.

pssst if you’re a quarter behind in CHE… the curve is slightly better. lol. :P

Hey shoyon I don’t mind! Ahh lol that is pretty random, cross your fingers for Pass 2 ): And I totally agree about a CC meeting…you should arrange one:D

Hey Phishy, do you have a recommendation for what I should do? =) The reason I can’t take MAT is because I took the equivalency of 17B at the JC, which I didn’t realize would make me unable to take it at Davis. The problem is I don’t know enough to go into 17C, and I am wary about so much lab time. I have no idea what class I should wait list for this quarter D:

@ Phishy: Would you be kind enough to explain this please. > "
pssst if you’re a quarter behind in CHE… the curve is slightly better. lol. :stuck_out_tongue: "

BIS2A recommends to have taken Che2 first because parts of it somewhat requires basic chemistry knowledge.

What phishy was saying about better curve is not always true and people should not rely on it or schedule based on it. Basically the logic to that is that people who take Che2A 1st quarter are believed to be more “hardworking” and more skilled with chemistry. Many people who begin taking it 2nd quarter either failed the chemistry placement test 1st time around (happened to me), or took workload chemistry (waste of time, useless, I didn’t even bother to take it, just retake the chem placement test.).
I think I made it sound very confusing… but basically… more stupid people begin taking it 2nd quarter (?) so theres a bigger standard deviation and curve? something like that.
But thats not the say its easy, cause remember, everyone got into the same college you are in based off the same criteria and almost everyone is just as hardworking as yourself.
hope i didnt make things too confusing… i think i did… but w.e lol

Thanks Herman
So have you taken both Bio and Chem? Do you think I would be chancing it by wait listing for Bio? (I haven’t taken Chem since junior year, but I can use an AP/SAT II Chem review book…)

I havn’t taken bio yet, I’m taking it with Gerhart in the fall. I just finished my chem series this summer. Studying ahead would definitely help, but not necessary. If you go to lectures and keep up along with the class, you should do fine.

if i could redo my entire freshmen year, you betcha i would’ve taken physics 7A winter quarter. seriously.

7A is pretty easy. however, it does take a different type of thinking that most frosh don’t have. it’s VERY conceptual, and i’m kinda glad i had a year’s worth of college under my belt before jumping into the fray.

he prbly recommended it since the 7 series doesn’t really use calculus. it just comes in handy if you’re someone like me, and someone who questions everything so that you do well on the quizzes. lol. it’s always nice to know where an equation comes from, instead of blindly accepting it as is. a lot of the 7 series is about REALLY understanding what you’re working with; there’s very little traditional “solve-this-problem-with-these-equations” type of questions. there’s a lot more “you have this, which goes to this… can you explain why using this model?”

i think as a frosh coming into davis, though, i would suggest the bis2 series since it’s much more “memorize-memorize-memorize” and less “you know x; now let’s see how well you understand it by applying it to situation y!” imo, it’s prbly going to be an easier skill-transition, although that’s up to you.

Ahh thank you so much sutoroberrii! So did you not take Physics until sophomore year, but would have taken it freshman year? I think I will wait list for BIS, and hope that a month is enough to brush up on Chemistry :D

I took BIS 2A before taking Chem. Honestly, if you taken HS Chem, then it’s not a problem.
