I'm in a bit of predicament right now. In my junior year, I didn't take Pre-Cal and now as a rising senior I have Pre Cal on my schedule instead of what should be Calc. I want to take Calc senior year because I feel like it would help when I go into engineering and also because I feel like colleges might not like that I didn't take Calc in high school. What should I do? Also should I take Calc AB or BC?

Oh yeah, I asked my counselor before if I could get credit for Pre Cal during this summer, but it wasn't allowed

Personally, I believe that would be difficult. If its not too late, can you enroll at a local community college and take a PreCal/ Cal class (you can audit it at a lower rate).
If you are going directly to Calc without it. STUDY OVER THE SUMMER.

Of course, as an engineer, you’ll have to be used to hard work.
If you’re very ambitious, you could take the BC test after self-studying BC and taking AB because I believe the BC test has an AB subscore???

Thanks for the help. I tried looking online for courses that would give me credit, but no luck The main thing I’m worried about is that during admissions, colleges will probably not like that I didn’t take Calc during HS especially since I’m going into engineering. Do you think if I take the SAT Math II, it will make it seem not as bad? That is, if I score 780+.

How did you do in your previous math? If you excelled it may not be a huge step up?

I’m auditing a Calc class this summer then taking it during the school year because the math at my school is competitive and the teacher is extremely difficult.

You could also take PreCalc then take Calc over the summer?

I think it depends where you want to go, that it would be very important.

And the 780+ would of course help.

You may be slightly weaker because of this on math, but doing things like the SAT and excelling at science should make you a more competitive candidate.

I’m in the SAME EXACT situation! I was planning to finish precalc over the summer nd take calc next year.

Now I’m just procrastinating… But I believe i will finish eventually if God may.

your lucky your school offers calc at all… I’ll probably end up self studying calc too…

by the way khanacademy may help with pre calc… I’m using the website it’s just aweeesome

Well I did pre calc online at EPGY… my school took the credit did you try that?

@SaraCo I took AP Stats junior year. I did pretty well. First sem avg was 99, second was 98.

The main problem is, I have no clue where to even start. I should probably talk this over with my counselor and see how I can solve this problem. Hopefully I can test out of Pre-Cal or something before I enter senior year. Also 2200andbeyond, thanks a looooot for the site, this will definately help a lot :D

@swiftfan13x I tried looking up online courses, but it didn’t really help because all I got was the not so helpful yahoo answer. I will definitely look in EPGY and see if my school accepts the credit

So there’s this website called ucgateway.edu which is a list of all the classes that the uc’s accept
I’m thinking if the UCs accept it other colleges should too

I live in Texas right now and I don’t think I will be going out of state since I already have auto accept at A&M and possibly UT-Austin. But that’s not to say I will be able to enter the engineering school.

Man, the US needs to change their education system, it’s so stressful. I need to move to Finland

I wouldn’t reccommend skipping pre-calculus. You’re much better off starting college with Calc 1 and a strong foundation than skipping a class and being behind/stressed/etc. It’s really difficult to succeed in high-level math classes without a strong base.

I would reccommend Pre-Calc as a senior, then take Calc 1 the summer after if you want to start with Calc II in the fall.

It’s really not worth skipping math classes, you’re behind for years…

I emailed my counselor and apparently she’s not even in the office right now and won’t be until august… I think I will just either self-study Calc or take it during the summer :/
