Hi,

I am a high school sophomore and I wondering if I should just try and take PreCal over the summer so I can test out of it and move right into Calculus BC. I really don't want to take it in school because I've heard that most people end up with much lower grades in PreCal than in Calc BC. I don't want to lower my gpa, but I'm not sure I have what it takes to do it over the summer. Pre AP Algebra II wan't hard for me, but it wasn't easy. I had a 96 average. I hated Pre AP geometry, but that was because I didn't study at all for it, so I had an 87 average (my only B). I'm not great at math, but I am above average. That being said, do you guys think it will be possible for me to take precalculus over the summer? If so, would this be a smart move? Is there any way that it would be detrimental to my future education and success in Calculus BC?

Thanks for any assistance,

If you’re not good at math, then don’t.

Define “good at math”.

What’s wrong with taking Pre-Cal and Calculus BC Junior and Senior year?

If I take PreCal in school, it’ll probably lower my GPA since I’ll do badly in it. My brain wraps around calculus much better for some reason. 2. I want to go directly into AP Physics C since I already tested out of B, I can’t take C until I’m taking calculus.

I’m in the exact same position as you, my friend. The problem is my school doesn’t offer Pre-Calc Honors as a summer courses, thereby screwing up my GPA. There aren’t any online ones either. Bummer for us.

If you would do badly in precalculus in school, over the span of numerous months, do you think it’s in your best interest to do it over the summer in the span of only a few months? If you think that you can handle it, go for it; maybe you should look at a few of the beginning topics now, and see if you can understand them on your own, because doing it over the summer will probably require a lot of work on your own part.

Honestly, my goal is to take PreCal in an environment where it won’t affect my grades. It won’t show up on my transcript or GPA if I take it over the summer. I already got through the first few lessons on my own.

I don’t understand why you think you will do badly in pre-calc if you have a 96 in Algebra II. Your reasons for wanting to do it over the summer makes sense to me. Go for it.
