Should I take SAT or ACT for Columbia?
which one they 'really' prefer

They’re weighted equally to the college but you can see the percent of people accepted by ACT and SAT on collegeboard.

They really prefer the one you can score higher on.

It doesn’t matter as long as you score the highest.

Columbia is in NYC. Everyone in NYC takes the SAT and the ACT is just an afterthought or a backup. No student here takes just the ACT. However, not everyone that goes to Columbia is from NYC. The consensus here among students is that universities here all accept the ACT but they prefer the SAT. Since everyone here takes the SAT, it’s a better indicator for aptitude to compare students against. You can’t compare an ACT score to a SAT score (the scales are incompatible, 36 vs. 240? (240 because you can’t unit points on the test)).
