should I take the ACT to get into a BSMD program

I’m a rising senior and planning on majoring in neuroscience or cell biology and maybe apply to BSMD programs . I’ve taken the SAT 4 times and got a 1360 and I’m taking the Bio, Chem, and Math II subject tests in August. I am still deciding if I should take the ACT because i don’t know if my score will be any better than my SAT and don’t know if it will get me into a BSMD program. Some of the schools I’m looking at are: Rutgers NB (state school), Usciences, Villanova, Cinncinati, VCU, UNC, Duke, Boston, Northeastern, UDel, seton hall… If I don’t get into a BSMD program it is not the end of the world but I just don’t know if I should give it a try with the ACT. Please let me know if you have any questions or if anything I said was confusing

Easy way to check: review an ACT book to get the hang of the specific rules, take a time practice test on your own in the library and see how it goes. Fwiw, the ACT rewards speed.

Also, companies like Kaplan give an actual test in a controlled environment and later assess your strengths and weaknesses and provide some kind of report. All for a small fee of $15 or so. That may prove more helpful in figuring out if ACT is a better or right fit. It was during one such impromptu evaluation by a local company during child’s sophomore year in high school, that we decided to go all out for ACT training and never bothered about SAT . (She got a 32 in that evaluation with no basic idea about ACT at that time and is in a prestigious program now). ACT has an additional science section (no complicated stuff or calculations) so if you are generally comfortable with science material it may help boost your composite score

Do you understand how competitive BS/MD programs are? You have on your list Cincinnati. They have 10 students enter the program from 277 applications. Of the 10, only 2 are from out of state. The average SAT is 1476 and ACT is 33.

If you’re serious about the BS/MD that SAT will have to come up or try the ACT. TCNJ (another state school) requires a minimum 1550 and 4.0. I don’t think you need more than 2 subject tests anywhere.

@Eeyore123 yes I know how hard BSMD programs are to get into but as I said it’s not my goal.

@NJWrestlingmom thank you, i’m going to take the ACT and see how it goes

My son took his SAT in sophomore and scored 1520. I’m not sure if his score will be any good for bsmd. He is yet to take ACT. He feels more confident about ACT than SAT. Assuming he scores better in ACT, can he chose to submit his ACT instead to bsmd colleges?

@virus0987 SAT is decent score. Let him take ACT also. Some students score well in ACT. Later you can choose whatever score you want to send (unless some college is very picky and state explicitly wants one score over other).
