how great is great?

above 2250? 2300?

my philosophy is...give it a shot anyway...

who knows...maybe instead of only doing really great on the act...youll be even better...besides....how can it hurt...all you lose is a few hours one sat. morning...and if your score sucks..you dont even have to let any college see it...

If you score very high on the SAT, e.g., high enough to put you in the upper 25% range of the college's usual admittees as to colleges to which you intend to apply, there is likely no reason to take the ACT unless the college actually requires it and does not take the SAT (the only such college you will find in any rankings of colleges is Brigham Young).

Nope, no point in taking the ACT if you aced the SAT, unless you like wasting time and money!

If the schools you want to go to require SAT II's, then the ACT may help. Many of those schools (not all) will substitute ACT, often with writing, for SAT I and SAT II's. Then if you ace the ACT, you don't have to worry about the Subject tests and you're done.
