Should I take the AP Chemistry exam if I am going to major in Chem Engineering?

Hi!
I plan on attending Iowa State University next year and major in chemical engineering. I love chemistry, math, and other science courses. I have an AP chemistry exam Tuesday, which I even still need to study quite a bit. I have a solid A in the class, but I realized taking the exam won't be the best idea, because if I do, I will have to skip my general chemistry course and start Ochem my freshmen year. I believe it would be better if I take general chemistry course again for a more solid background next year, because I am in no rush to graduate early. Should I not take my ap chem exam? (PS- I will only have to pay $13 and get the rest of my money back) Tanks for your help!

I am also an AP Chemistry student. It seems to me like we are having similar success in the class, but I did not find the class as enjoyable (hence why I won’t be going into ChemE). As I understand it, you choose whether to take your AP credit or not if you receive the required grade. For example, I expect to make a 5 on the exam, but I could still choose to take Gen. Chemistry in college if I wish to still take it. So my advice to you is to take the test anyways because it can’t hurt to try just for the heck of it. I would assume all schools have similar policies about this.

Even if you get a 5 on the exam, you will NOT be forced to skip gen chem. Its just there as an option if you would like.

My suggestion: take the exam anyway and see how you do. You might decide later to skip or not.

Not to mention it will get you out of having to go to class for 3 hours one day.

I signed up for every AP exam I could based on the classes I took in high school, even things like Physics that I knew I would never actually accept the credit for, if nothing else than just to get out of having to go to class a couple times. I realize that was terrible motivation, but hey, it didn’t seem to hurt me any, and I was unbelievably bored with school.
