Should I take the AP Lang/Comp test?

I'm currently taking IB English HL year 1, which is the same class as AP Lang at my school. Most of us take the AP test junior year in addition to the senior IB test, but I don't know if I should. My teacher is not preparing us at all for the test, and even if I self-studied, I wouldn't get higher than a 2 or 3. Is it worth my time to study for that test and get only a 3? I feel that if I don't take it I will be able to focus on getting 5's on AP Calc and AP US History.

It depends on what colleges you are looking at, but none will accept a 2 and only some accept 3s. There is minimal studying to the Lang test, more practicing and becoming familiar with the types of essays and getting good at the mc. If you are strong in English and willing to put in a little time a higher score then a 3 is possible. If not you should not waste your money on the test.

I want to go to UC Berkeley. I’ve taken short multiple choice practice sections and got scores like 2/7 or 4/15, and I heard that 50% is passing. It would take so much practice to get better and since I have no interest in English, I would probably not study that much. But would it hurt my application if I have AP test scores for every subject besides English?

No, if those are your scores on mc without prep it does not seem worth it…50 percent is passing, but you realistically need better in case you don’t do well on one or more of your essays. Don’t take the exam, it does not seem like a good fit.
