Okay, everybody. So I am set to take the tests for AP Calc AB and AP Lit/Comp in a few days. I am pretty confident about calc, and I know it can be useful for placement, so I'm definitely taking it.

However, I am totally underprepared for English Lit, feel I could possibly pass it, but am really dreading the studying I will have to do, as well as the test itself. I have done a little searching and it seems that a good score on Lit is pretty much useless currency at Pomona. I'm extremely stressed out already this week and don't particularly feel like wasting $126 and three hours of my life on this demon if I don't have to.

In short: Is there ANY reason whatsoever that it would be in my favor to subject myself to the torture of this dreadful test?

Actually, as far as I know, Calc will not help for placement. I was planning on taking the BC test, but I called admissions and asked about it and ended up not signing up for it. With the math placement (again, this is from what I know. I’m fairly confident in it because I talked to someone in admissions, but there’s still a slight possibility I could be wrong), you take a placement test there, so taking the AP test really doesn’t do much of anything.

The only thing it will help you with is the 2 AP credits you’re allowed to use toward graduation. If you’ve already gotten a score of 4 or 5 on 2 other AP tests, I’d recommend not taking Calc (although I’d call admissions first just to be on the safe side). If you haven’t already gotten 2 4/5 scores, ignore this whole post :)

^Also, as far as Lit goes, I’d say call them and ask. I asked about Lang and got a somewhat vague answer, but it sounded like English AP credits don’t help because English classes aren’t structured like, say, math classes, where there’s an intro level you can skip.

If I don’t take my APs, I lose the “AP credit” for the class so it becomes a regular class - do you think Pomona would mind?

Well, my English class is not called AP, so that class-title thing won’t affect me. I already have a 5 from APUSH, and I am pretty sure I can manage at least a 4 on Calc, so that 2-credit thing is pretty much signed for. Can community college credits work toward that 2 as well? Because I have credit for art and music.

I really don’t know about the whole community college credits… I’d try calling admissions and see what they say about it, they’re really helpful.

Neha, I doubt it, since you’re already in, haha. I put on my application in the awards section “National AP Scholar (pending this year’s tests)” and I didn’t end up signing up for enough tests to make it there anyway… I talked to my college counselor and both he and I agree that it probably doesn’t matter. Again, though, if it’s gunna keep you from sleeping at night… admissions would know better.

Community college credits do count. I also managed to get my community college classes and my grades onto my transcript. The registrar’s office is really accommodating in that way :)

Haha k thanks Nick.
