I will be graduating from undergrad this semester. I've completed all the requirements for a math minor, but was previously going to drop it and simply not take the minor. The reason for that was because I was going to do a Masters right out of undergrad and I would be allowed to transfer those credits up to Masters. However, I have changed my mind on that, and I plan on going straight into the workforce. I have been offered and will accept a job in another state, in a city with a very strong local university (not quite as prestigious as where I currently go but still quite good).

Chances are I will do a Masters at some point, but I won't know what university. It would either be the local one where the job is, or the one I currently go to where I can transfer up half of the degree (that is, if I forgo the Math minor).

Any opinion on whether or not I should take the minor?

What do you have to do to get it? What are your pro/cons if you have already completed the requirements?

Do not get the minor. There is realistically zero benefit and could end up coating you time/money.

Spend your time in more productive ways.

To me, this just means you need to apply for it. In which I would say do it. But if for some reason the above SOMEHOW means you haven’t fully completed the requirements (aside from signing a couple forms)…then yeah, I wouldn’t worry about it.

Not sure I understand this part fully

Chucktown (and others), my school allows us to transfer credits from undergrad to grad if we don’t use them for any requirement in undergrad. I could take a minor in Math without taking another class, but I would forgo transferring those credits to a masters program if I use them for the Math minor. It’s highly unlikely they’d transfer to another university, so while I’d do a masters somewhere, I don’t know I’d do it at my university.

If I understand correctly:

You will take those math courses anyway.

You can either get an official minor, or allow them to be credited against a master’s degree program at the same school.

If that is the case, would those math courses actually be useful for those master’s degree programs you are interested in? If not, then that no longer factors into the question.

UCB, close, except that they have already been taken. And yes, they would be useful.

Since you already have a job lined up, the only current objective is the potential MS.

You have two options.

1)MS at current school
2)MS at school local to job.

In both situations actually accepting the minor adds no value and in the first case it actually removes value.

I wouldn’t accept it. Aren’t you already a double major anyway?

Is there any chance it could help with admissions to a masters program?

Grad school admissions would only care that you took the classes. Just because they won’t show up as a minor doesn’t mean you didn’t take them. They will still show up on your transcript
