I am a rising senior whose number one choice next year is pretty much Rice. I took the SAT December of my junior year and got a 650 on math, a 660 on reading, and an 800 on writing. I took Subject Tests this month and got scores of 660 on Spanish, 680 on Math II, and 800 on US History. I took the ACT in February of my junior year and got a composite score of 32 (36 on English, 30 on Math, 32 on Reading, and 30 on Science).

My question is this: Should I take the SAT again before I apply to Rice? I am almost certain I will apply Early Decision, so that means I have two more chances to take the exam. I was not too worried until I looked at Rice's latest admissions statistics, which show the mid-50% of admitted freshmen had SAT M+CR scores of 1410-1570 (mine is 1310).

I am leaning towards taking the exam again. Hopefully I can boost both my math and reading scores closer to--if not to--700.

Also, just wondering--should I take the SAT again for the other "selective" schools on my list? These include Tulane, George Washington, and Emory. I might apply to Brown but just for the heck of it lol.

I had almost the exact same SAT score as you, except a 640 instead of 650 math. With only a couple weeks of studying I got my math score all the way up to a 790 – and the only question I missed was an easy one I made a careless mistake on.

Definitely retake it, because it’s pretty easy to raise your math score at least. I recommend getting the book PWN the SAT, going through it, then doing as many math practice sections as you can find. That’s all I did.

My CR didn’t change at all, probably because I didn’t really do anything for it, but still. Since it’s pretty easy to raise your score I’d say go ahead.

Wow–I am going to take it again. I figure I will just brush up on math and try to boost my score to 750+.

I probably won’t prep much for CR because those skills take longer to develop.

Thanks for your help.

I’d recommend retaking it. Even if Rice doesn’t superscore (considering the best sections of all of its applicants’ SATs), it wouldn’t hurt to show them that you have multiple strengths; almost everyone fluctuates noticeably between SATs.

I got a 2230 on my SAT (710 M, 740 CR, 780 W). I’m a little frustrated; I want to major in a math-related discipline (computer science), but my math score is a little low for that. I’m more of a verbal/visual/spatial thinker than a logical/computational one. I’ll probably retake it.

Be confident! Try telling yourself that if you care that much about your scores and about getting into a competitive college, you’re the kind of person who deserves to be able to do so by getting good enough scores. You are!
