Should I take the SAT again?

I took it once last December and scored a 1780 (550R, 620M, 610W) and then took it again in March of this year and scored a 1990 (620R, 660M, 710W).

Since everyone here on CC seems to be knowledgeable about these subjects, I was wondering if I should take the test again?

I am a junior and have yet to do any real studying for the SAT. If I were to put some serious effort into studying for the SAT this time around, could I seriously improve my score? If I did improve my score, would it not really matter as colleges see all of my scores? Will I take the chance of scoring significantly lower next time, or dropping my writing score greatly? Finally, would it be that much better to score around a 2050 as apposed to my 1990?

Thanks for your help!

Edit: Although it may sound conceited, I am pretty confident that if I study over the summer and take the SAT again in the fall before sending out applications, that I would do quite a bit better, but please give me your input regardless.

That's a very nice improvement from the first to the second test. Good job!

Provided that this jump was not just a fluke I'd say do some serious studying and take the test again. However, you need to be really committed to it because you'd be taking this test after a long summer. And you know what teachers say happens to the brain during that time...it goes to sleep.

Have you considered testing in June?

I have not considered testing in June, as I would have to travel over 45 minutes to the nearest test center. Although this is a large inconvenience, I would still be willing to do so if it made a difference in my scores.

What colleges do you intend to apply to? What is your end of the year courseload like? Do you think you would have time to prepare for the June test? If you would just be taking the test again without preparation, then I would probably wait and take the test in October. Many schools will take your best score on each section no matter how many times you take the test (a practice you may see referred to as "superscoring").

I plan on applying to the UC system mainly, among other schools. I have my AP tests coming in the next two weeks and then I am basically free of my challenging coursework. The only reason that I would want to take it in October is that I am already going to study for the SAT Subject tests and ACT this summer, so allotting time would not be an issue. Thanks for all of the great replies!!

UC is pretty competitive, so yeah, I'd retake. With some solid prep I am sure you'd see good increases. Go for it!
