Should I take the SAT essay if it's not required for certain colleges?

Surprisingly, most (if not all, I haven’t checked yet) of the colleges I’m applying to do NOT require the SAT essay for the new SAT. While timed essays aren’t a favorite of mine, I’m not that bad at them. If I take the essay and do well on it, will it improve my admission chances (provided I do well on the overall SAT)? And if I do poorly on the essay, can I just choose not to submit it to colleges?

Also the essay isn’t even recommended by the colleges I want. According to CollegeBoard, the schools (from my current list) have it as “Neither required nor recommended.” If that’s the case, will colleges even look at the essay if I submit it?

They don’t consider it because the grading for the essay portions of the SAT and ACT are extremely flawed (graders work in bad environments, have low wages, and are inexperienced, among other things). The essay scores play literally no part in a college application. If you want to take the essay you can, but it really doesn’t do you good or anything. From my viewpoint, you’ll only get more stress and tire quicker if you take it.

I would take it anyway if u feel u could do well. It could show that you don’t like to go the extra mile

I was under the impression they were considered important, for some reason (although on second inspection it seems not)! Woops.
I don’t see taking the essay as hurting your score, personally. Read some tips online and do your best. Just make sure not to run out of time.
