I am just so disappointed in myself and my score and I am barely outside of the Median for the school I want to apply to (UNC-CH).

The first time I took it cold with no studying, the second time I took it I had worked with a tutor and was extremely motivated, and the third time I didn't study as hard but stupidly expected the same kind of rise as between the fist two tests. Anyways how harmful is it to take for a 4th time?

These were my scores -

SAT Scores:

1st time: 1510 [CR:620, M:440, W:450, E:6]

2nd time: 1780 [CR:690, M:520, W:590, E:8]

3rd time: 1760 [CR:700, Math:500, W:560, E: 8]

Super Score: 1810

Well, if UNC-CH honors score choice, it wouldn’t matter. Otherwise, I can’t really say…

By your own account, if you study diligently you appear to do much better with the preparation. In addition, perhaps even analyze your errors, and maybe even work with the tutor again, your scores should increase some, but most likely not the degree of increase you accomplished the second round. Taking it a fourth time, with diligent study, prep and analysis of errors should result in the highest score you can achieve - also try the ACT with the same approach - the results may be even better for you! Go for it!

You can opt out three things:

1) Take the SAT reasoning test once more. This time just study for Maths (It won’t matter if you fail in CR and Writing because you’re going to super score). Study hard so you can raise the score to 700+. If you get a satisfactory score, take the test for the 5th time and study only for Writing to raise it. Finally super score and send it to the colleges. It isn’t harmful taking it a million times as long as you can superscore!

2) Take the ACT test and see if you can do better in it. I’ve seen many people who can ace the ACT way better than SAT and vice versa. it all depends upon your fast thinking as ACT is often referred to a “Speed Test”.

3) If you don’t want to do any of the above, drop the idea of applying/going to UNC-Chapel Hill and choose any state university with less/no standardized test requirements. But I strongly recommend you to opt the 1st or 2nd choice

Good Luck!!!
