I am a senior now and wondering if I should take it again. My scores were: 700 verbal, 800 math, and 740 writing (8 on essay). I only got one wrong on the multiple choice section of the writing, but did worse than usual on the essay. So I was thinking I could improve from this 2240 to 2300+. Would that really matter enough for me to spend time studying again? I am applying early to Columbia, if that's relevant at all.

If you haven’t taken the SAT too many times then go for it.

You should probably take it again to try and improve in the non-math sections. I’ve recently learned that the essay readers like to see descriptive detail rather than vagueness. More color in your essay may boost that score higher than an 8. If you have College Board’s SAT book, look at that for tips.

Hmm. Thank you for your tips. I have taken it twice, and it’ll be my third time this fall. I don’t think it’s TOO many times to make it a disadvantage. Thank you for the helpful tip on the essay. I got a 9 last time and an 8 the second time. Whenever I look at the prompt, I cannot really think of great examples to talk about, and I end up writing at least one general paragraph that shows vagueness. I will now go register on collegeboard! Thanks again!

I wouldn’t retake just to improve your writing because it’s considered the least important score when it comes time to college admissions. But if you want, you try and up that 700in verbal.

That’s true… considering that writing was added recently and that some colleges (like Cornell I believe?) only composite the scores only out of 1600, with verbal and math. I will take your advice, thank you yettiddqq8!
