Should I take the September ACT?

I am heading into junior year and was wondering if I should take the ACT this fall. I am not finished taking all the math required on the ACT as I have not taken any trig, but will in the first half of junior year. I just took my first practice test for the math portion and got a 29. The ultimate reason why I want to take it is because I am terrible at the SAT(although fine with math on it) so I want to know early into junior year if I should prep for the ACT at all. If I get a 29+ on the fall ACT, I will most likely not take the SAT and try improve my ACT.

I also have taken the reading section, not english and science yet, and did not finish in time. I ran out after the first 32 questions. But I did go 28/30 on the first 3 passages. It was my first time taking a practice test for the ACT so I had no clue how to pace myself.

What do you guys think?

I would wait to improve your math skills, so maybe take the February test. This will allow you enough time to retake in June and the following fall if you’d like.

I’d advise you to take a full practice test immediately, under the same conditions as the test, to understand your score and determine if you should prep for the ACT. Don’t go off unfinished tests. The ACT has full practice tests on their website, and ACTQuantum’s website has explanation videos for the math section.

Practice using released tests; I ran out of time on the science section during my first practice test, too. Don’t get too psyched out, you’ll get used to it. A tip I’ve heard for pacing is to set your timer or watch to three-five minutes before the section time is done. This will train you to go a little faster, so on test day you won’t have to rush through the test.

Best of luck! You will be fine either way as you have over a full year to improve your score.

Thank you for your reply.
I feel as though I should take the official one in September to be sure that I am choosing the ACT over the SAT. I don’t think I could be completely sure without actually seeing my score. Don’t colleges look at the highest score anyway and most even superscore it?

Yes almost all colleges superscore.
If you are planning on taking the September test, tomorrow (Friday)is the deadline for registration. Sign up ASAP to avoid the late fee.
