Should I take three years of French?

I am an upcoming junior and I am going into Honors French II. I really hate the class and the language, but for admissions three years looks better then two.

Should I take it my senior year (third year) if I really do not like the class or just suck it up? I am not a good foreign language learner. I would probably replace Honors French III with AP Psychology.

What is your suggestion?

I am not looking at Ivy's, but some good schools.

NYU

Northwestern (talked to a former student who only took two years)

I dropped in the beginning of French 3 but after a year off, I have realized how much help it will do in getting into good colleges so I am going to take it back up

Thanks for the advice.

I am thinking it would look about the same. Colleges like to see at least three years of a foreign language, but replacing that with an AP class shows the rigor of courseload.

It’s unfortunate that you’re not enjoying the class. My sense is that foreign language study becomes easier once you get past the preliminary/beginner phase. That also means that 2 years, and two years only, of a foreign language is not particularly useful. Should you need to take a language in college you may very well end up back at square 1.

Also replacing a core subsequent subject (a foreign language) with an elective (AP or not) is not the tradeoff that selective colleges want to see. Some of the colleges on your list are in the selective category.

So I recommend that you not drop it.

Thanks everyone. I actually took French because I didn’t like the other options. My school also offers German, Latin, and Spanish. I want to take Italian in college (my school doesn’t offer it) and I really have no intention in counting French after high school. I should have taken Spanish like everyone else in this world.

French will help you beyond college in the future. Trust me, it works better than any other language in clubs.
