Well if you got deferred I would wait until you get an official decision. I don’t really think it’s good or bad practice. Just do what you want. Are you hesitating on telling them you were rejected from somewhere?
You should still thank them for taking the time to write a rec letter even if you were rejected (unless it was like super bad)
I think it’s a good practice to tell them where you are going which is after May 1.
I’ve never actually heard about telling teachers where you got rejected.
