I am currently a freshmen in the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University. In high school I was deciding between Mizzou and ASU, I was accepted into both journalism programs and from what I know, both are extremely reputable. However, I chose ASU because it felt like the right choice when I visited. Now that I am in second semester, I am becoming more and more skeptical of my decision to attend this school. So far, I do not feel academically challenged. Also, I am originally from a suburb of Chicago, and although I do not have a problem with the distance, west coast people are WAY different from what I am used to.

I have recenently been looking into NYU. I love New York City, and because I want to be a magazine editor, New York is the perfect city to live in. However, I am concerned about my chances. I received a 3.6GPA in high school and was relatively involved, however I only received a 23 on my ACT. So far at ASU, I received a 4.0 last semester, am involved in several clubs, and currently hold an internship with 944 Magazine. I am an extremely driven person and in my college career so far, I have let nothing stand in the way of achieving my goal of becoming a magazine editor. However, I feel my high school scores will eliminate any chance of getting into such a prestigous school. Do you think I should transfer and if so, what do you think my chances are?

I would say you have a pretty good shot at NYU. Keep in mind it is extremely expensive, not only in the tuition but costs of living. You should weigh the pros and cons of how much you really want to pay for some prestige. Is it really worth it? You are only a freshman, do you really expect freshman level courses to be difficult at any school? ASU has a fun campus and unless you are not satisfied with the overall atmosphere of the school and the people around you I would advise you to stay at ASU. Just my .02

Are you also considering transferring to Missouri? Or just to NYU? Is financial aid a factor? ASU is not considered to be an academically challenging school, thus a 4.0 at ASU is very good, but not great. Without financial aid, you will need at least $54,000 for tuition, room, board, books, fees & other expenses for 9 months at NYU. NYU is not generous with financial aid; transfer students usually receive very little financial aid according to what I have read.

Your high school GPA isn't bad, and it's great that you've worked so hard in college thus far. The internship is cool too. Unfortunately I really think that ACT score will keep you out of NYU if you transfer at this point in the game. However, if you wait one more year to transfer and do it as a junior, NYU will look less at your HS record and ACT scores (which they probably won't take into account at all). They'll focus more on your college accomplishments instead. Good luck!

No, I am not considering transferring to Mizzou. I like metropolitian areas, that is what attracted me to ASU in the first place. Currently I do not have financial aid...I will need it for NYU though. My parents are willing to pay around $27,000 per year for college. NYU is about $33,000, so I will have to discuss it with them and find out my options.

$33k for tuition only? COA is probably closer to 50K like icy said. NYU is know for 'gapping' on FA, and that's for freshmen applicants, transfer FA could be even worse.
