Not gonna check this account any longer. My point is that Oberlin isn’t for everyone, and for me in particular it doesn’t feel worth the cost of attending, even with aid involved. This is just my opinion, you’re free to have your own. Many people are happy here. But, as I’ve mentioned, a lot of POC upperclassmen I’ve encountered have had similar reservations about this school.
@freshbeans I have a child at Oberlin and I agree with you that it does have a very unique feel. If it works, it really works, and if it doesn’t, I can see how you could feel alienated. A few parents on this forum also have reported that Oberlin did not work well socially for their kids. That said, I have a few suggestions that might improve your experience whether you end up transferring or not. First, maybe get to know some of the Conservatory students who may be different socially than those at the College. Second, I am wondering if your classroom experience might be specific to a particular subject, class size, teaching style, or just bad luck. One of the reasons my kid picked Oberlin is that she was looking for an intellectually engaged classroom environment, and by and large she has found it. Also, as you move into upper division classes in your major, you will generally see more seriousness of purpose, especially in the smaller classes where there really is no place to hide if you don’t do the reading. You might also search for a club or ExCo where you have a greater chance of meeting like-minded people. Best of luck to you whatever you decide.
@freshbeans: I think that some posters may have misinterpreted your posts–at least according to my reading & to your reaction.
Based on your posts & the reactions in this thread, it seems clear to me that you should transfer. LACs tend to have distinctive personalities. Oberlin has a strong & distinctive campus culture. If it is not a fit for you, then transfer. No need to try to force yourself into a culture with which you are not comfortable. Move on & enjoy life !
Maybe you’d like Binghamton better.
If you can get in.
I saw this while looking at the bakery thread. Oberlin has a distinct style and if it isn’t for you transfer, maybe after your sophomore year if it is too late now. LACs tend to have wealthy, preppy students. Oberlin is obviously strongly “progressive”, as you can see from the current controversies.
You aren’t going to be able to transfer up much unless there are special circumstances. I transferred up a lot, but my first semester senior grades were really messed up and I didn’t adjust the schools to apply to properly. However, I transferred from one school that was a bad fit to another that was a bad fit. I would be careful you don’t make that mistake.
I would think most NY students at Oberlin could transfer to Binghamton, which should be an easier school. It might be reasonable to apply to SUNY Buffalo, Stony Brook, and Binghamton, among others. You could apply to some top 50 school as reaches. Oberlin is close to that level, so you may have a chance.
