Should I transfer? Please help, I need to decide soon!

Hi,
I go to Syracuse University and I'm a sophomore. I'm thinking about transferring next year to another school. The reason I'm thinking about transferring is because I thought I wanted a big school but this school is too big for me. I have some friends here but I still haven't found a set group of close friends yet, and I really think that's something I need in order to feel completely comfortable at my school. I feel like at a smaller school that might be easier to find. I also don't like how this school is very Greek oriented. Overall, I'm just not in love with my school and I'm never excited to back to it at the end of breaks.

However, my other option is to go abroad. I'm thinking about going abroad to Spain either next fall semester, or all year. I've heard from a lot of people that when you go abroad you make a bunch of close friends that you continue to be friends with once you get back to school.

Either option is a risk. All I want is to finally have the college experience I want to have and deserve to have. I would really appreciate some other people's opinions on what you think I should do. Thank you so much!

Hi!

I feel exactly the same way… but I have a different situation, my school is actually pretty small and I think I want to go to a bigger one. Anyway, the things you say about wanting a group of close friends and not loving your school or being excited to go back after breaks is something that I completely relate to. If you weren’t a sophomore I would say that you haven’t given it enough time and that everyone feels that way because of the transition and what not. But I think that you have spent enough time in your school to the point that if you don’t like it now, you’re never ring to.

I’m going to tell you what people told me when I asked them if I should transfer. Just apply, you don’t have to decide right away if you want to go and you also don’t know if you’ll get in, so just try and then when and if you get accepted, you can figure out what you want to do. Make a pro/con list and choose whatever feels right!

I know it’s risky and scary, but I think that, because you sound so unhappy, you would regret not transferring (or at least trying to)…

Anyway… Good luck!

Hi
I’m having the same issues as you guys. I’m in the same situation as YalieGirl, wanting to transfer from a smaller school to a bigger one. I also did apply to my top schools just to see if I get in before making my final decisions. I’m also a sophomore so when I transfer, many issues may arise, especially in terms of my credits transferring over or having to take an extra semester or even a year longer to graduate. I think that you while you should still try to apply to other schools as a transfer, you should also look into the study abroad programs. My friend who is also from syracuse university is currently studying abroad this semester and she’s having a lot of fun and meeting new people. While you may think that transferring to a smaller school is the only choice you have to feel more comfortable, it may not be so. I currently go to a CUNY school and while it is smaller than syracuse, the comfort level that I feel is close to what you’re feeling. Here, everyone just minds their own business and most likely just go home after classes. So, the chances of making close friends are just as slim. However, I can tell you that being able to make friends in any type of college is also dependent on you and how willing you are to go look for them. Perhaps join clubs or get to know your roommates or hallmates better. Definitely look into transferring and study abroad though if thats what you think is best and definitely make that pro/con list! Hope this helped :)

Thanks guys, I appreciate the advice. I’m still undecided as to what to do though. Does anyone else have any opinions?

hey! considering apps are due pretty soon, i would just go for it! give yourself the option to leave if you want to–it can’t hurt you to apply. Nothing worse than wishing you had done something when you had the opportunity to do so. If you’re even considering it, I’d fill out the common app and send the bad boy along.
