I currently go to Michigan State University. I’m premed. I like MSU’s campus but I hate a lot of the people who go here. I was offered guaranteed transfer admission to Michigan. My question is: is Michigan better for premeds? Which is better Michigan or MSU? Are the classes significantly harder at Michigan? Thanks.
I am sorry to hear that you are not liking it @ MSU. I am sure many of your required pre-med classes will be tough at both schools. However, for classes graded on a curve (your grade is determined by how you do relative to your class), it will probably be tougher at Michigan, just because the student body is more intense academically. That being said, I have heard great things about UofM’s pre-med record. MSU may have a good record too, I do not know.
It’s up to you. The pre-med curriculum here at umich is pretty tough, but about 250 people who did undergrad at umich get into medical school each year.
You should definitely transfer if you are unhappy at MSU. You will have far more research opportunities at Michigan and a with it much better chance for excellent recommendations. You also should major in whatever you are interested in and take the courses you need (e.g. organic chem) for pre-med , Michigan has no ‘pre-med’ major. Some of the classes are ‘weeder’ classes and graded on curves, try to avoid if possible.
UMich has such awesome research opportunities (and a research hospital). If I were pre-med, I’d much rather go to Michigan. Will it be harder? Yes, probably. But it also means you’ll be better prepared and more competitive. U of M premed grads make better MCAT scores.
“I hate the people who go here” is a lousy reason. MSU is huge, so if you can’t find some to get along with, that’s on you
Being afraid of challenging classes is a lousy reason to not transfer. I mean you’re trying to go to med school…
