Should I transfer to University of Maryland?

I'm currently a student at UMBC, and it is honestly an extremely boring place to go to school if you want to have any sort of social life. I went to college expecting a good balance between academics and parties/social events, yet at UMBC it seems like all of the school sponsored events suck, there's no school spirit, and no parties. A lot of students go home on the weekends so the campus is practically empty and the people who stay end up sitting in their rooms all weekend. Other than that, the campus is safe, the classes are on the smaller side, and in general I've gotten used to it. Everyone is super nice.

I've been considering transferring to UMD for a while now, as they have a better social scene, a big Jewish community (which is important to me), and just generally a "college experience" type of environment.

Now, I've hear that as a transfer student, it is nearly impossible to get on campus housing at Maryland, and I'm also concerned with making friends again my sophomore year after everybody else has already settled in, and living off campus definitely won't help me.

If I stay at UMBC, I'll have good quality on campus housing, all of my friends, and am considering joining a sorority to help with the social life aspect of my life.

If I transfer to UMD (and get in), I'll probably have to live off campus, I'll have to make friends over again (although I know people at UMD), parties/school events, and hopefully a different college experience.

What should I do? I'm so conflicted and scared that if I transfer I'll have trouble making friends all over again and regret the move for a better social scene.

I am a University of Maryland-College Park student currently, so I can give you some definite insight. Although I am planning on transferring to another institution in the fall, but this is based on entirely academic reasons since the UMD poli sci major does not have a concentration in political theory, which is what I want.

With that said, YOU NEED TO TRANSFER. Clearly you are unhappy at UMBC so that in itself is a reason to. From what I have seen from UMBC, since I go there annually for a debate tournament, it is dry, depressing, and literally a ghost town every weekend. That is the exact opposite of what college ought be.

The social scene at UMD is dynamic. I understand you are afraid that you wont make friends from not living on campus. While living in the dorms is preferable to make friends. There are far too many opportunities to make friends; whether many many organizations, clubs, student government, or even within class.

The off campus living is pretty good. The varsity and view are close apartment complexes that have an extremely dynamic social scene, most of the parties happen there. But there is also houses you can rent. But also you said you wanted to join a sorority, so that would essentially satisfy your need to restructure your social scene.
