Should I transfer? What are my Chances?

I am a African-American/Native American student at Tufts University...I think I might want to transfer to either Brown University,Georgetown University, Duke University,or Dartmouth College..I am interested in being Pre-med but want a total liberal arts undergrad feel. Tufts is okay, but I just feel like something is not right. Should I transfer or just give Tufts some time? If I do transfer..what would be my chances of getting into any of these schools (I went 2 Georgetown University's highschool )...i am very involved on campus and have a 3.0 gpa. Thanks a lot.

African American and Native American? You're in.

only 1/4 Choctaw Native American..

Yea he has a better shot bc of it, but he has 3.0 gpa. You need to bring that up 3.3 to have fairly good shot at it. I mean other than that its still possible to transfer into those school, they will just be reachs thats all.

Dartmouth is your best chance

Your URM status will be a huge plus, but your GPA is really quite low. Try to get it to at least 3.5 by the time you apply and your chances will improve exponentially.

Seriously, stop exaggerating the significance of the OP being an American-American and Native-American, it does not mean that with a 3.0 he is "in", whoever said that is just an idiot. You're making it sound like all black students at prestigious universities are simply there to fill some diversity initiative. Being an URM might/might not help you, depending on the other parts of your application and personal history.

Seriously, stop burying your head in the sand and discontinue sharing your flagrant naivete. Obviously he's not automatically in because of his minority status (it should be obvious that I was being tongue in cheek); of course other factors matter, but being an URM helps tremendously.

It's as obnoxious as saying steroids might/might not help you hit home runs, depending on your batting technique and coordination. An edge is an edge, and helps regardless. Steroids will improve your home run hitting capability; whether or not you hit 70 in a given season is uncertain. Affirmative action will augment a URM's ability to get into a school; whether or not he will get in is uncertain, but the chances of it are greatly improved. Improving one's chances doesn't constitute "help?"

According to the study, if affirmative action were eradicated, 80% of spots that currently go to blacks and Hispanics would instead go to Asians; the average SAT score of accepted students would rise a few points. Being black instead of being Asian is equivalent to a 280 point advantage on the SATs (out of 1600); the advantage is 230 points for black instead of white.

This should really get its own thread.

Since you didn't apply this year, it looks like you'll have another year to see if Tufts works for you and to improve your grades.

All of the schools you are considering are very good, but you need to give some thought to why you want to leave Tufts. Tufts is an excellent school. Unless there is another school (or schools) you really would rather attend ... and you have some clearly defined reasons for wanting to attend ... I don't understand why you would transfer. Fortunately, you have some time to research other schools before you would be applying for a transfer. I suggest putting serious thought into this over the summer. Again, those are all good schools. Should you transfer? Only you know the answer that is right for you.
