Should I try for an ExxonMobil internship/coop with no experience?

Im a senior civil engineering major at UMD. ExxonMobil is coming next week to do on-campus interviews and I was thinking about going. The thing is I have no engineering-related work experience so I'm already at a disadvantage. Do I have any chance at all? My GPA is 3.21 and I was thinking of trying for a co-op, which they say they have more opportunities in. This is my second year as a civil engineering major (i switched my major 3 times).

So should I try or not? What are my chances?

It can’t hurt.

It’s just that I’m one of those late bloomer types that really didn’t get adjusted into the whole career thing (i’m still not that adjusted I think). I just don’t want to be dismissed because I’m already 21 years old and still a newbie.

What’s the worst that can happen if you go for the job? You don’t get it.

I highly doubt your age is going to be taken into consideration when you go for the job. Just go for it. If it doesn’t work out then try to find a different company. You have to gain experience one way or an other and not trying because you don’t have any is definitely the wrong mindset to have.

if you can get it, go for it

even if you totally embarrass yourself, it should still be worth it IMHO

if you don’t go, then you will never get it.
if you go, you have 50/50. Admitted or Rejected.

Moreover, let’s ask yourself a question. A simple question:

So you don’t have any experience, s how do you expect to get a job post-graduation? Now that makes sense why you should go and try.

If you can’t get the job, at least you have some experienece with interview. It can help you in the future. If you can’t, then find another one.

When I tried to get an Internship with Exxon earlier this Spring they said they usually target students with a 3.5 GPA. So when they ask about your GPA just be prepared to explain it and emphasize strong points for them to look past it. Just wanted to give the heads up.

You probably won’t even get an interview with less than a 3.5. It can’t hurt to apply but Exxon has pretty high standards.

@jwxie: Not quite 50/50. But everything else is spot on. If you don’t try, you’ll never know…

Go for it, you have nothing to lose. I went for an interview with Exxon 2 years ago with zero experience and got an offer. Had to refuse it for another company but I wasn’t expecting to get it in the first place.

Even if you don’t get it, it’s worth the interview experience.

I would try it.

@ semisight
LOL Yeah. I should be clear. There is one more option: waitlisted.

Doesn’t hurt to try. XOM typically does look for a higher GPA though. Without any relevant experience, don’t be shocked if you aren’t selected to interview.

No, dont try for it. Lock yourself away in your room and dont come out until every opportunity in life has passed you by.

I think Exxon changed their GPA requirement to 3.2 (correct me if I am wrong). Just wondering guys if it is possible to get an Chem. Engineering internship at Exxon (or any other company) with previous experience as an EHS intern??

Hell yeah, go for an interview. They not going to publicly humiliate you if they don’t hire you. It is better to have tried than to not have tried at all.

Going through the whole process is worth it in itself because it will prepare you for the next time.
