I'm planning on taking the pre med route in college. I've gotten accepted to schools that are better known for their pre med program such as UPitt and Moravian. And I've also gotten accepted to Villanova and I've applied to Lehigh. But of all the schools, Temple has given me a full tuition scholarship. Would you suggest to take the scholarship at temple? Is it too good to pass up?

I would definitely take Temple- it’s a good school, and now you get to save your money for medical school.

First of all, the other schools you mention are not signicantly more “prestigious” than Temple. Take the free tuition and save your parent’s money for medical school.

Search the parents forum for posts by curmudgeon: his pre-med daughter turned down Yale (and Amherst) for a full ride at Rhodes. In her case it turned out just fine: Yale med school.

more prestigious should always be written “more prestigious” because says who? the main concern i would have with Temple is that second to Detroit… Philly is one of Americas closest thingswe have to a third world city.

So obviously no one should go to UPenn either, right? ^^^

If Villanova would offer you the same, or even close to what Temple has offered you, go for it. It is a very good school and is in a very nice environment. Otherwise, stick with the full-ride from Temple.

What makes you think UPitt, Villanova, Moravian and Lehigh are more prestigious or better for pre-med than Temple? For those of us who live outside of PA, we’ve heard of these schools, assume they are reasonably good but frankly, I couldn’t tell them apart in terms of prestige and I doubt many people outside of PA can either. And given that Temple has a medical school, I assume their pre-med advising won’t be too shabby, nor their opportunities to do research and to volunteer.

Unless there is some significant reason why you don’t think you’d be a good fit at Temple, or you are well off and indifferent to the scholarship, or another school has offered you enough money to make it comparable, then go with Temple.

I’m not sure it’s quite the same - Rhodes is noticeably more selective than Temple, has the purely undergraduate focus of a LAC, and is 1/18 the size of Temple but has the same size endowment.

Still, your basic point is what’s important…many people get into medical school from all sorts of places. For example, several new med students at Hopkins last year came from universities with a local or regional draw like U West Georgia, USF, Morgan State, and Missouri S&T.

Well, that depends on several different factors, I think. First and foremost, have you received financial aid and/or scholarship offerings from all of the other universities? If there’s a possibility of receiving a scholarship at another university, I would hesitate to commit this early. This is especially the case if you’re still waiting on some admissions decisions. Make sure all offers are on the table!

You should also consider how you would make your decision if you were NOT pre-med. After all, the overwhelming majority of pre-meds wind up on another path. Only 50% of students taking the MCAT apply to medical school, and many more drop out long before the MCAT. Temple is certainly a prudent choice for a pre-med considering the expense of medical school…but make sure it’s a college you’d still like to attend if you decide you’d rather do something else.

Your talking apples- oranges comparing Temple to Lehigh,Villanova, and Pitt.Temple’s average SAT scores are several hundred points lower.

Yes they are. Behind Penn and CMU, Lehigh and Villanova are the next best Pennsylvanian universities. Temple is very far behind.

Mid-Range SAT Score (Math + Verbal):
Temple: 1010-1210
Lehigh: 1220-1400
Villanova: 1210-1390

US News Rankings:
Temple: #125 (NU)
Lehigh: #38 (NU)
Villanova: #1 (RU North)

For OP’s pre-med aspirations, Temple would be fine particularly if a financial burden would be imposed on your family.

The point is that med schools aren’t going to care whether an applicant went to Temple or s/he went to Nova or the others.

For premed, take temple

Philly isn’t a third world city. Not even close. I worked in various parts of the city for over 20 years and never had a problem. Every city has bad areas however, and unfortunately Temple is in a very bad area. But … The campus itself is very safe. I know a lot of people who have gone there and liked it. Make sure you do a campus visit first - I’d say that about any college - but take the scholarship and save your money for med school.

I don’t believe for a minute that you’d get the same quality of education @ Temple as you would at the other colleges. Can you get into med school from Temple? Sure. Thats not to say that Lehigh etc aren’t significantly better schools.

This age-old question surfaces again. If you can afford to go wherever you want and the cost is irrelevant, then wait and see where else you get in and enjoy the luxury of choice. If cost is at all a factor, especially with med school hopes, take the money and run! And do well in college, get a good GPA and MCAT score and you will be fine.

Are you instate for Pitt? If so, the costs for going there might not be too bad. Otherwise the choice should definitely be Temple.

TickGrey- Yes, I’m a Pennsylvania resident. UPitt isn’t too expensive with the instate price.

Rebel11- I agree about the qualities of education. That’s what I’m most worried about. I’m curious about how much better a school like Lehigh, Villanova, or UPitt will prepare me for the MCATS and medical school as opposed to a school like Temple.

Hi Emma,All I’m saying is the quality of the education received is higher @ the other schools. We just had to make a tough decision for my son. He was accepted Early Decision to UPenn. There is no doubt he could go to other schools for way less money. We decided it was worth the extra $ for the quality of a Penn education. Good luck wherever you wind up.

* I’m curious about how much better a school like Lehigh, Villanova, or UPitt will prepare me for the MCATS and medical school as opposed to a school like Temple.*

Those other schools won’t make a difference for you on the MCAT. Your performance on the MCAT will depend on how well you do on the exam. Colleges don’t “prepare students” for the MCAT. They present bio, chem, ochem, physics and math…you learn it. How you do on the MCAT will depend on how well you remember what was taught and can process what you learned.

Rebel is talking about a different situation…comparing an ivy to other schools. The schools that YOU are talking about are going to have similar strength students in the science, pre-med classes.
