Should I turn down Stern?

I got accepted to Stern, but the tuition is just so much...I got about 14,000 in scholarships, and the total estimated cost is 47,000. That leaves about 30,000 per year in loans if I get a job while I'm there to cover the daily expenses. My family and everyone is urging me to turn them down. I've been waitlisted by Emory, and I'll see how that pans out, but my next best school is Georgia Tech or University of Georgia, of which UGA would be my choice since it's a better business school and has offered me more aid. What should I do though? If I don't go to NYU and I get rejected by Emory (likely since my financial need is so high) then I'll end up at UGA.

EDIT: I'm also a Stern Scholar. This is so hard to decide!!

Also, if I end up at UGA, where should I try to transfer for business?

I would go to UGA but you should go to NYU probably :)

I will be in the same situation a year from now with probably Umich or Utexas, so I am going to give you what this best works out for my family. Again, we are pretty poor so listen carefully. GO to Stern because you should be to pay off all your loans and living expenses with working for 2 years. Also, when it comes to an undergrad business degree or business in general, name and prestiege matter a lot. So now part two of the plan comes : while you are at Stern you need to work your balls off ok? You have to make sure that you clearly need to get a high-paying job so you can start your adult-life decently. I will be faced with this same situation and from what I have researched and found out from family friends and other sources is that name matter's alot in business and your degree from Stern will be worth it. Also, I live right across the lincoln tunnel and am 20 minutes away from manhattan and I can tell you that I know a lot of people that end up working off the books who work at NYU. Such as this one kid I met who pumps gas at a gas station to pay tuition and another one who is a day to day construction worker. When you do this, you can also show off at Ibank interviews about how you really know the value of money. So, honestly go to Stern, you will be able to break into the upper class with a degree from stern.

School prestige only matters for first or second job....its what you do wehn you get there that'll matter in the long run....i wouldnt take on that debt....just develop a passion and vision for yourself..the money'll come later on..go to UGA

^ Yeah, well the first job is what counts.

Yea really. You sorta need to get a solid first job to keep moving up the ladder. You say "yea, I have 10 years of experience managing my local McDonalds" and nobody could care less.

Go to Stern. It is on a totally different playing field compared with your other two schools (in terms of business). AND, as a Stern scholar you will have lots of other benefits. Stern is considered one of the top 5 business schools for undergraduate. No way turn that down.

DO NOT TURN DOWN STERN. NYU Stern will open a lot of doors and get you into a lot of doors. You simply can't get the opportunities that Stern will offer at GA Tech or UGA. Do it even if you have to take on debt. And Stern IS a top5 business school(#5).

save money and go to UGA, if you have to network on your own throught UGA, go ahead, its better than being out 120k.

stern.. no question about it.. its worth it

The thing here is that I can transfer from UGA. Can't I? I know I would probably be able to transfer to Emory, at the least. But I'm getting very different responses here.

The overall concensus seems to be that Stern will be worth it. It will get you where u need to in life and it will definitely be worth the money. You will make up for it in a year or two. Then its smooth sailing. Well at least till MBA time.

If you are instate for UGA and GT, then definetly go to UGA or GT, you are pratically going for free.

Stern will be an investment for the rest of your life. Trust me. If you lay down the $$ now for this undergrad degree (particularly if you can graduate stern scolars), you will have a much smoother road than if you graduated from UGA and GT. Graduate from stern, work a few years, and you'll be making $120k in bonuses. Good stuff =]

Hey duobeef. Remember me from IGN? Anyway go to Stern. Yes, it is expensive but it is well worth the investment and will pay for itself soon enough. Remember one of the fundamental rules of economics: if your rate of return on investment is going to be higher than the interest rate you pay for the loans then you absoultely do it.

I don't think I can go...I can't come up with the student loans since I don't have a cosigner.

if your family is telling you to turn them down, do it.

anyways, it's not like UGA graduates don't get top jobs. there just isn't as much opportunity compared to stern, but if you do well (maintain a 3.7+ gpa), get involved, and get internships, you will be in a great spot to land a job on wall street and get into top MBA programs.

As I said before, go to Stern. If you were going to pursue philosophy or art history (LMAO michael lewis) as a major, then yeah even though NYU has top programs in those, they really wouldn't be worth the money, but for business, you really should go because this is the business of making money after all and you will be able to pay off your tuition in a year or two. Stern IS worth it.

....UGA grads DON'T really ge top jobs. For ever UGA grad that lands a top-job, there are probably 7-8 Stern students in the same position.

Stern is considered second only to Wharton in terms of investment banking / finance. You'll be making $100,000 / yr when you graduate. Your salary, if you're good, will rise exponentially. Who cares about a measly $120k in loans.

And don't do something because "your family told you so." College is all about growing up, taking responsibility, and experiencing life for YOURSELF. You're not going to college for your family. You're doing it for yourself, so make the better choice. Look, money is worth a finite amount. A good education is really priceless.

Stern over UGA anytime. Stern scholars is awesome. if you do well, Stern degree will help you pay off the loans in no time and even pocket some. good luck!
